Default Whining Noise After Cam Change

Hey ya'll, I am at a total loss here. I have an RPM dependent whine after a cam change. It sounds like a blower, gear drive, or alternator.....

I have a 2001 TA with headers ORY cat back etc. The cam is a cam motion cam with 223 duration on intake and 226 on exhaust, lift is .578....

I have checked all the vacuum lines, checked everything for tightness and removed both belts. Without the belts, same noise.

Any ideas??????

Kevin

Cam bearing look ok when you took the stock cam out? Most people don't even look at it. You have hardened pushrods and good springs?

My Futral F-13 sounded like a blower under the hood. I think it has to do with the way cam motion grinds their cams. I cant see any other difference between those that whine and those that are silent.

You can or can't see any differences?

Yes, cam bearing in the front was fine, and the new cam spins and slides easily in the bearings, so I don't think I nicked a bearing.

Hardened purshrods 7.400", and CC beehive springs 918....

Sounded - until my lifter rollers broke apart trashing my cam and lifters..... ...twice.

Ive since replaced with a comp 232/234 112 otherwise known as the torquer 2. Should be complete after this weekend if the weather holds.

As for the guitar in my avatar, thats one of my own. I built it from scratch except for the fretboard. Heres some pics: http://www.ihearyou.com/~tony/pictur...ar/page_01.htm

My Lunati has been whining since I installed it (about 6k ago)- it's not that loud and I got used to it. It becomes audible at about 2k rpm. I was thinking perhaps the camshaft retainer plate or just the cam itself.

I took out a futral cam after about 3000 miles because it whined. It drove me nuts. Put in a TR224 and no more whine. For some reason some Cam Motion cams whine, sounded to me like the whine was coming from the valvetrain.

Well, pulled the Cam Motion cam out and put the CC cam back in, voila, no whine. I have yet to contact Cam Motion to see what the deal is after removing the cam. Cam Motion said that they had never run across this problem when I was troubleshooting...

i believe a lot of the futral cams have had this whining problem, ultimately resulting in lifters getting trashed. apparently was a bad batch of cam motion grinds that had lobes with grooves on them or something..

everybody has problems at one time or another..

Yup same. Nothing at idle, but as soon as you hit about 2k, it whines like a bitch.

Same with all those other videos I linked.

Martin, Did you dig this one up to continue the debate on comp cams cores?

I was shown a link to this thread earlier today and just felt it was ironic that some people in the Comp thread said that other cam companies had never had issues.

I was just messing with you. I knew thats where this was going. The funny thing is, my close friends and I have been using comp cams since the late 90's and not one cam has failed on us yet. I really think that it comes down to how you set up your entire valvetrain. Running an extreme lobe with stock lifters, 5/16 pushrods and throwing some dual springs at it that "should get the job done" is where most people run into problems IMO. I'm not saying that there aren't people that haven't experienced problems with correct setups, but it seems that most of the failures are happening to people running XER, LSK or similar lobes on the street when these lobes were designed for race only applications. I don't see people complaining that their stock bottom end let loose from a large shot of nitrous... It's kind of expected as GM didn't design these short blocks for it. Now you can flame GM all you want but it's not their fault. It's the same idea as trying to run a LSK lobed cam for 30,000 miles with the same valvesprings you originally installed with the cam and having a failure. The easy thing to do is blame the manufacturer.
