to answer both questions yes. I'm running Comp Cam 850 lifters & stock rockers on a Comp Cam 231/237 .589/.595 112+4 lsa. about 2k miles w/ no problems.

There is nothing wrong with the "R" lifters. The horror stories you hear is only about them not being setup correctly. And as is with everything that involves moving parts and geometry...It will naturally screw itself up. I run the com cams "r" lifters and stock rockers still as well in my Z28...no problems.

Because the "R" series, part number 875 is only supposed to have .002"-.004" of preload. If you just torque them to spec you will have like .050" preload...which is wayyyy too much.

so, how do i then set these lifters up?
i have a pushrod length checker i will be using to find out the correct PR length, but, though i understand both posts, am confused as of what to do now, .008-.010 preload COLD? .002-.004 when?
thanks for the specific preload info on the R lifters. i didn't know it was .002-.004.
i really appreciate it. finally getting to do the H/C install, and would like to use the R lifters i have, and wouldn't want to have "all" the problems we hear about them.
PS: oh! i will use stock rocker arms.

To get to the proper small preload on those lifters all you have to do is use a pushrod checker to measure length to zero lash then add proper preload, and like magic you now have your new PR length that will keep the lifters at the proper preload.

i get this, but, the small preload, what is it? 1997bird just mentioned .002-.004 warm/hot. and someone up there said .008-.010 COLD. lol
since the engine will be cold, because i will be assembling it, then, is it .008-.010? thanks guys.

PS:if you look up in the posts, people are saying get the preload to .003. or get it to .002-.004, because .005 is way too much. hence, my confusion.

I would guess people complain about them because they are preloading them to stock lifter preload values which is in the .050 and up area, these lifters need low preload which is done by having shorter pushrods.
