What are the advantages to this? It almost seems like it might be considered a hydrid/conversion. If you are talking about an LS1 going into a fox body, then weight reduction is your best friend.

I think the biggest advantage would be the high RPM horsepower. The shorter stroke 302 will rev like crazy and with the right cam and intake combo, will make insane top end power and be fun as hell to drive.

The real challenge will be to find someone who makes a de-stroked crank and piston setup that will allow this displacement reduction. You couldnt just sleeve it down, it would involve a new crank on the stock bore I think.

Anybody else have any suggestions?

I remember an article in a car craft I think that was about different engine combos that can be used with 4.8, 5.3, 5.7 cranks. Maybe somebody could see what a 4.8 crank in a 5.7 block would be in ci

would be a nice build for a turbo motor.

Yep it would make for a stout forced induction engine.....NA though, you are just giving away power.... You want MORE cubes, not less.

From what I've seen, a big bore/small stroke motor can make as much peak hp as the same size bore/big stroke, just waaay higher rpm wise. It would be fun as hell!!! But you may not have enough tq to pull up your driveway.

yes true, but a little Nitrous Oxide can fix that! so this why im consider this setup and noone else really has it.

what about a 6.0 block/bore with a 4.8 5.3 crank this would give you the big bore small stroke if they are interchangable.

We've got the original Chevy 302 here...Very fun motor. Doesn't float the valves till 8200 with this cam...I've shifted it at 7800 with absolutely no problems...Very fun when your old-technology pushrod motor is revving as high as the hondas.

Got any more detailed information on this?

That is incredible. Those Hondas you are talking about have shorter strokes and smaller pistons as well. I would love to hear what 7800 sounds like.

I believe the reason 302 was used was for Z28 heritage. All Z28's used to have 302's.

Peak being the keyword here. It will make much less average horsepower than a larger cube engine. Not to mention the higher you spin it, the more dollars you'll end up sinking into the engine.....Cool? hell yes!

What is the stroke on the 4.8s? I think it's more than 3.0? And how could z28.com write that whole article and never mention the crank!? must have been billet.

some of the racing series have a maximum of 5.0 liters. All of the GTO's and corvettes that were at the Rolex 24 race I went to a few weeks ago had destroked ls1's. Actually I know for sure that the GTO's had destroked LS2's.

I wanted to do a 302 for a while too but the money involved in having a motor rev that high and be reliable is extreme.

The only reason of doing a 302 is that the car is going into racing and regulations mandates the restriction of displacment. Other than that stick with the stock displacment and built good strong lightweight parts to rev it to 8K.

If you are looking for a n/a high rpm setup, why not use a stock stroke ls1 crank, and go with a 4.125 bore motor? The large bore will allow for bigger valves, better flow, etc. etc. and will outperform a stroker motor with stock more of the same displacment EVERY time.

but, if this is for a class with a displacment limitation, then it will be a good top end type motor if that is what you are looking for.
