Default Got quoted 21 hrs for cam install WTF

Didn't wanna do heads/cam b/c too much $ right now, didn't wanna go blower for same reason. Was gonna do just cam install, 21 hours for cam install and valve train upgrade.....Wow....What do I do now?

Doing it myself is not an option.

Take it to a shop that knows what the **** they are doing.

Most shops around here charge $400-$600 for cam, timing chain, oil pump, valve springs, pushrods, retainers, etc.

Find a different shop, or someone to do it on the side.

Yeah I was also interested on about how much a cam install runs.
For example if I order the ms3 cam kit from tsp
cam, valvetrain, pushrods.

How much is a fair price?

Cam/springs swap should take about 8 hours if the guy knows what he's doing and doesn't run into any major problems. ~$400 sounds like a fair price for the swap (including timing chain and oil pump install).

I bet he was goin by the labor guides, My best friend is a GM tech at the local dealership, and when you actually look at the labor time that GM or Chilton gives for all that....its about right, but they also include complete removal of engine and MANY unnecessary things....I would pay no more than 400 myself, and like others said...4-7 hours

$1800 for the following:

Comp cam
918 springs
hardened push rods
oil pump
timing set
gaskets
plugs
fluids
AC recharge
dyno tune
install all the above
tax

Sounds reasonable to me for sure.

LOL that is so dumb. I would rather replace an entire head with the valvetrain already installed than replace the valvesprings/pushrods/retainers/etc. with the heads still on the car. $1000 for a head swap? LOL...bring it to NC...I know a shop that will do your heads AND cam swap for around $600-$700 TOPS, probably even less.

Here's the e-mail reply.....

And NHRA Man, MOPAC is local too, do they have a dtno for the re-tune?

See below:

Camshaft – 500.00

Timing Chain – 150.00 – Billet double roller

Chrome Moly pushrods – 175.00

Valve springs/Titanium retainers – 650.00

Labor to install camshaft, install valve springs, retainers, - 15 hours for camshaft and 6 additional for valvetrain. ( 21 hours – 87/hour = 1827.00)

You need better valve springs/retainers, because you are going to increase the operating RPM range, and the stock

Valve springs can’t live, and if you break one..very expensive.

Ls1 edit – dyno tuning budget 2-3 hours at 125.00 per hour.

There ya go. I knew it seems pricey.

21 hours? holy lazy mechanic batman! I did it with a friend in 11 hours the first time and we didnt know what the hell we were doing. Second cam swap took me 8 hours.

edit: Valve springs/Titanium retainers – 650.00

where can I get a set of these depleted uranium springs? they better be if they cost that much. A good double spring will cost MAYBE $250 and titanium retainers arent $400. THis guy is ripping you off. Dont let him do it.

Dude,i can do a cam install in about 5 hrs from stop to back running again. it only took me 3 hrs to tear the heads, intake and cam out. i'm going on my 5th cam swap next weekend. my bud just did his first head and cam swap last week,he used directions from LS1 how to's and did a fine job. maybe you should try it your self.
