Default probs after heads and cam install

Man guys, I could seriously just cry.

I just finished up a heads and cam install on my '98. PP 58cc heads and 231/237 TSP cam.

Car ran fine yesterday for 20 minutes or so.

On the way to the muffler shop it started detonating really bad, I pulled over and parked, tried to reflash the VCM with the tune and pulled 20% of the timing. I starts up for a second and then starts detonating really bad a maxes out the KR gauge (HPT).

other important facts

-open header
-small coolant drip on passenger side of block after tow truck picked up the car. Detonation may have blown head gasket?

-Plenty of oil pressure

Im thinking maybe a collapsed or junked lifter, bad knock sensor, it's like the car loads up quick and then starts detonating all to hell. Like the exhast valve isnt openning?

going to pull the valve cover and whatnot tonight after work. ideas?

Do you know what cylinder it was? Pull the plug and both rockers and hobble the car back home. Why was it detonating so bad?

I dont know what cylinder it was, car is home now - towed a few blocks. I think its on the passenger side valvetrain. Back into it this weekend...

I dont know why it's detonating so bad... I was hoping someone would have an idea?

You sure its detonation and not something that has let go? I dont know what would do that unless you suddenly wernt getting enough fuel. Were you in open loop or closed loop when it happened? Pinched ir shorted o2 wires by chance?

Update:

two exhaust rockers were loose, one on each side - fixed - good news

Pretty sure the head gasket is toast on the passenger side- ****.

looks like I have another day of work ahead of me. All in all not too bad, it's nice out and I still have my health.

just sucks that I can't go beat the **** out of my new project.

thanks for the suggestions guys, if anybody needs me I'll be passed out drunk on the sidewalk until 9:30 or so, then in county.

Glad you figured that out. Next time use loctite or thread sealer. What symptoms of a blown head gasket? what gasket? How did you torque/tighten the head bolts?

I tightend the head bolts via the sequence in LS1Howto.com, I was slacking on the rocker arm part (obviously).

you live you learn right...

the coolant dripping off of the back side of the passenger side of engine leads me to believe I chunked the head gasket. It was the most obnoxious pinging I've heard in a while. The car runs good now, just drips coolant after.

Should I put more thread sealant on the head bolts? comments appreciated.

.

It's not leaking around the coolant plug maybe? I'm sure it's there or you'd have lots leaking out.

I think they came loose because I torqued them with my brain torque wrench instead of using a torque wrench like I should have. I'll check that coolant plug and the blockoff before I pull the head. appreciate the support fellas.

Ok guys, round two. I have a coolant leak, its a head stud that has coolant coming up around it. I dont know if its always been leaking and I just didnt notice it at first... or what the hell happened.

Questions: should I just pull the bolt out, put some sort of thread sealer on it and put it back in? should I put a new head gasket in? why am I such an idiot? Does anyone have any prozac?

I would first check to see if it simply loosened and didnt hold its torque. Try and retorque it first, might not fix it, but it couldnt hurt to try before tearing back into the motor again.

blue lock tight on the rocker studs, I had mine come out on me and beat the hell out of one valve cover, everyone that I know of that has an lsx engine and put in an aftermarket cam has the same problem without locktight.

Any chance of one of the heads being ported too much and leaking coolant?

coolant is on the outside of the head so I doubt it...
