Default ls6 or hotcam

I have a 98 ta a4 that is my everyday driver. I already have Hooker LT's with an offraod y pipe and a hooker catback. I am going to put a cam in it really soon and I can't decide which one. I dont' want to use a stall converter. I was thinking of either a gm hotcam or an ls6 cam. Does anyone have either of these cams or maybe a better suggestion. Keep in mind I drive on the highway everyday.

I had the LS6 cam in mine, with most bolt ons and made 370/370. I need to port my tb, get and underdrive pulley, and a cut out. It had mid 380's in it, and I got it pretty damn cheap. Spent a total of $280 on the cam, springs, and pr's.

If you want to stay somewhat on the small side. A TR224 or comp 224 is a well proven cam and would make more power and be alot more fun. The LS6 cam makes stock like power till 4000 and then shows some gains above that, but isn't real impressive. The hotcam is alot more bark than bite, and there are better cams out there, such as the ones listed above.

Can I ask, why dont you want to go with a convertor? I think you would gain/feel quicker with a convertor, even on the freeway. A convertor was one of last mods I did and after it I wish it would of been the first, even before headers.

I agree with Redneck as well. I ran the Hotcam for a couple of years and then switched to something alot bigger. I think the Hotcam would be a good choice, but so would the Tr224. An auto isnt as forgiving as a m6 with the Hotcam either. Your going to need a decent tune to make the cam enjoyable, or any cam for that matter. Eitherway like I said above, it would be nice to have a convertor to compliment the cam. With the HC and my idle up at 750 I sometimes had to stand on the brakes to stop the car from creeping do to the idle surging. A convertor stops all that. My idle is at 900 now and the car doesnt move. You also dont have to go super huge with a convertor. I have a 3500 and after I drove it for a couple of days it feels like stock to me. You could go from a 2800 to a 3500 and you'd notice it more than the cam.

I know you weren't asking about a converter, but I'd have to second that. You'll gain more from a converter than a cam swap. My friend runs a 12.4 now with a stock Z28 and a converter.

I agree a convertor makes a world of difference, its like a whole new car, those stock convertors actually make me sick when I think about them-way to slugish for a performance car. With a higher stall you'll at first notice the throttle response seems worse almost mushy, but like the other guy said, in a small amount of time you won't even notice it anymore, the pros outway the cons with this upgrade-and your car will run much better with the new cam-

with the Hotcam your main area of gaining power will be your low end torque, although you will be able to tell a difference at higher RPMs. but, your idle will suffer without a tune.

torque converters turn automatics on street tires into gas guzzlers and burnout machines

id do a cam over a stall ANY DAY

if you want something that sounds nice id deffinatly go with the hotcam over the LS6, if you just want gains.. i dont know what to tell you but the hotcam and a tune would probably net more than LS6 and a tune
