Default Blew stock ls1 looking for suggestions on a 402

So I ran into some standing water last night during a crazy storm and my SSRA sucked up enough water to blow a hole in my LS1. They totaled my car out and hopefully i will be receiving around 5-6gs to find me a new engine. I am thinking about a 402 or 408 and some cheap heads that will flow enough for that displacement but nothing super spectacular since i am on a stock drivetrain (for now). Any suggestions on a budget 402/408 that will make sub 450rwhp would be appreciated.

SLP 402 short block or a LS2 crate motor will do nicely.

I would go with the TSP 402 because you will get great service from those guys and the price is great as well. Do you have to buy the car back from the Insurance company when they total your car?

They said bluebook is 7600 but salvage value will probably be around 2000. I think i am going to use my stock heads (I know it will choke the sh#t out of the 402 but i am on a stock drivetrain) and scoop me up a semi mild cam. So now my question is what all do i need to complete the 402 given i need a cam and valvetrain and i am going to use my ls6 intake and ported tb.

Gaskets. Front, rear, head
New oil pump.

If your old motor is in one piece all your sensors swap over. Along with the front cover, rear cover, etc...

you might want to look into getting some more heads most of the 98's came with a different ls1. if you look at your valve covers and it bolts up around the outside they might not work. all of the other ls1's valve covers bolt up in the center. only the 97-98 corvettes and 98 f-bodys got this engine the blocks are also made different. check it out http://www.hotrod.com/howto/113_0504_block/
