Default 99 LS1 sitting for 3 years with no starts...questions...concerns???

Ok, so I have an opportunity to purchase a 99 LS1/T56 combo from a family friend that has 15k miles on it. The owner purchased it to put it in his classic Corvette, but never got around to it. The motor and trans have been sitting in his garage for 3 years and have not been started. The motor and trans only have 15k miles on them. Should I be concerned with the fact that it has not been run for 3 years? Is there a certain procedure I should go by for starting or prepping the car to be run for the first time after 3 years?

Or, should I run the other way...

Thanks.

as long as the motor still turns over, you should be good. just poor a teapsoon of oil in each spark plug hole and turn it over by hand a few times before you start it. this will make sure everything is ok. might go ahead and change the plugs while you are at it, much easier when the engine is out

If the heads and intake were not off, and the engine was inside, then I would not hesitate to purchase it. The injectors and fuel rails might be gummed up - maybe. But the entire thing should be good. I'd just get the injectors cleaned or get new ones, and clean out the fuel rails.

You could unclip the injector wire clip on each side, and turn the motor over with the starter to build the oil pressure up.

Could just unplug the coil packs as well....that might be a tad simpler.

Just a thought.

But wouldn't it continue to inject fuel? Potentially washing down cylinders with fuel....

Yes it would continue to inject fuel into the cylinders, however you would only turn the motor over for a matter of seconds. Shouldn't have a negative effect on the motor unless you continued cranking it over and over...

If the motor is going to build oil pressure, it will do it within the first 5-10 seconds of cranking. I've seen mine build 20psi or better in the 1-2 seconds before it starts.

NO OIL IN CYLINDERS - use tranny fluid instead! The oil will burn on startup and immediately carbon the rings!

Pull the fuel pump fuse. Takes 2 seconds.

Is there no other way to force pressurized oil into engine? What about connecting an accumulator or an electric oil pump to it (like turbo timers use)?

I agree getting some lube into the cylinders and rings is important, but what about the valvetrain?

Valvetrain is fine to run for a bit while u're priming the engine. Main thing is to get oil to the rings and eventually up into the valvetrain.

Thanks for all the advice. Turns out the engine is an LT1...

The guy didn't know what he had. Oh well. I found a good deal on another 2002 LS1 anyways.
