Default Cam on stock converter.

I am looking for a little more performance out of my car (a4) and am looking to go internal. However, I don't want to get a stall converter due to the massive decrease in MPG. I don't want a big cam by anymeans, but I know if I go too small, I'll just be wasting money. My mods are just a lid, bellows, filter, lsx 78, and magnaflow. With those mods I've been thinking reverse split but again...I'm not really sure. I've refrained from doing too many exhaust modifications because its my daily driver and don't want somthing rediculously loud. The two cams I've been between are the CheatR and the good old 224/224 on a 112 lsa, but please don't limit your options to those two cams, I am open to anything.

Both of those cams are too big for the stock converter. A small converter with proper tuning will be much more satisfying than a cam with your mods.

If your first mod isn't a converter your will need some good brakes. 21/22mpg hwy with my mods.

First of all, a cam will decrease your MPG more then a verter. Verter still locks up in 4th and feels like stock. Just rev it all around town. I have a 4200 in my V6 and I still get 27MPG. Most of the MPG loss came from the 4.10s anyway. I drive on the highway to work and it buzzes at 3k. Get yourself a 3400, it will be very tight for daily driving and good enough for that cam. Converter should be the first mod for an auto. It will get you out of those dog RPM down low. When you get a cam youll loose all that TQ down low and your car might even end up slower.

There should be a sticky made about this topic.

Don't waste your time doing a cam swap if your gonna keep the factory verter. A stock cammed car responds VERY well to changing the stall speed. You could get yourself a small cam, and I mean it would have to be a SMALL cam, that could manage to work with the stock converter. Then someday your gonna come across the guy that has a 3500ish stall, stock cam, and he's gonna smoke your *** even though you have a bigger bumpstick.

I think I speak for all the knowledgable people on here when I say no converter, no aftermarket cam. Get a good stall and the bolt ons, then think cam. You will be amazed what a good converter will do for the SOTP and 1/4 et.

FWIW I had a TCI SSF3500 and I LOVED it. I was even gonna go bigger if I hadn't gotten bored with the auto and got rid of it for my current m6.

Don't take my post the wrong way, I'm just trying to help you out. Good luck and feel free to ask any questions you might have. Myself or the other fellas on here will be more than happy to help you pick out what's best for your application/goals.

I have a 23X duration on a the stock converter right now, It's awesome

It's a dog until 3750 and pulls against the converter at lights. Im just waiting for a time to put my 4000 stall in. I wouldn't reccomend the stock stall for anything larger than the cheaTR.

Don't worry, none of this is being taken in the wrong way. I really appreciate all of the advice and sharing of prior experiences. It looks like a converter should be the next thing on my list. Probably something around 3200? Thanks again all.
