Default Are all piston & ring sets the same for ls1 block?

I have been searching and trying to dig through common options for an overbored LS1 block. I'm not looking for anything super fancy, N/A cam only car, no nitrous or FI. Looking for something under $700.00

JE, Mahle, Diamond, Sealed Power/Speed-Pro. They all seem about the same, are there no real "options" for these? I've been looking through sponsors and catologs.

Is there a non-forged piston that's decent? I wouldn't mind going cast because I won't be running any nitrous, but wondering if I should go with forged anyways for the extra insurance/strength. GM doesn't make a overbored piston I take it?

For road racing, any specific ring set I should get?

You might as well go forged since your already in there tearing it apart. You also might as well get forged rods, bearings, and nice rod bolts too. All of the different piston manufacturers make good products.

I have had good luck with JE forged. Pistons are usually $650-700 without rings. For road racing I would definately use a forged piston. Cast is more prone to cracking from the extreme heat and endurance.

Wiseco makes ls1 pistons and offer them with std 1/16 rings instead of mm rings, used a set in my new 370 and are nice pieces for the money.

I've been reading about coatings, and valve reliefs, and side gas ports, did you opt for any of this for the JE set?

Which rings? Moly coated? Just standard JE rings?

you dont need gas ports for a low power motor (i.e. under 800 hp or so). Get the pistons coated if you feel the need. It's going to cost you 120 bucks. Worth it in my opinion but not to a lot of people though.

If you search on ebay there is a company that sells a cheaper forged piston and rod combo for like 750 bucks. One of the guys on the board runs this on his supercharged car. not sure of his name though. he had no problems.

Might be just what you're looking for.

Yeah, it's Mahle (with rings) + H-beam rods... Like $759 for standard combos... low comp is an additional $60 or something, real great setup for cheap.

I'm using stock rods, super budget setup. I won't have the coated. I just wondered if the top seal rings were worth it in this case or just the standard rings that come with it.

anyone had experience with the mahle setup? I've read the OEM GM LS6 Ring set has a napier 2nd ring to scrap oil to help with oil problems.

Apparently, the Mahle pistons are shelf pistons and have are made of a slightly different material than the JE's/Diamond pistons, therefore not rated as high for forced induction, but would work great, and for a great price, i would recommend them.
