Default This chirp is driving me INSANE!!!!

I have this annoying chirp that sounds like it's coming from the back of the motor.. It sounds like it COULD be the tensioner issue.. but the chirp exists with all of the belts OFF of the car.

It will vary with RPM and disappear about ~2300 or so.. It's extremely evident at idle.. embarrassing as hell at red lights...

What the hell is it? Stuck lifter maybe? Would some seafoam in the crankcase maybe free it? HELP!

check out you clutch area,i would pull the tranny check the pressure plate torque specs,if its not torqued correctly you could get a whobble on the tension fingers and that then wobbles other stuff like the slave surface.just something to check,I dont know what a spun bearing sounds like either, but i would look into it.

Clutch has no effect on the noise. Oil pressure has been perfect lately..almost seems TOO high. 40 idle 60psi cruising 70psi WOT

"Chirping" is the word people most often use when they are describing the sound they hear coming from a bearing going bad. This means needle or ball bearing noise not from big end rod or main crank type shell bearings. The sound they make is not described using the word "chirp". I was going to guess clutch throw out bearing, but since you say the clutch doesn't have an effect on the sound and you have removed all the belts and still hear it that doesn't leave a whole lot to blame it on. Try and locate it with a mechanics stethoscope. It's time to "Go Fish"!

okay, since you eliminated belts and t.o. bearing (maybe pilot bearing instead?) i'm going to say header exhaust leak. tighten the header bolts....

I have the noise. It is only when I am decelerating. NEVER under acceleration. And it's much more evident with my cutout open, so I'm sure it is either internal, or exhaust-related. Doing a head/cam swap soon so we'll see if it's in the upper engine. Also my rear passenger side header bolt was broken when I got the car, so mine could be coming from that. That also will be fixed during the swap, since new heads are going on.

When I had Hooker LT's, the O2 sensors screwed into the outside of the headers, not the inside like my QTP's. When I installed them, I had to cut a small section of the aluminum fuel line heat sheild and bend it up so the sensor would not touch it on the driver side. Once, the sensor was rubbing against the sheild and made a loud chirping sound when idling. Had to go and re bend the section I cut so it would not rub. Don't know about FLP headers, but it is something to check out. Could be rubbing against something, if not the shield.

Update:

I poured 1/2 can of seafoam into the motor on Thursday morning.. drove it for about 75 miles.. no change. The next morning, the chirp was gone. The only other thing to have happened was that the car sit through a rain storm for the night.

Who the hell knows what's going on...

Ok, My A4 has the same chrip. Sounds like a bad altanator, but its not the problem. I have done the stethoscope thing and can't pin point it. only hear it at idle, touch the gas just a bit and it goes away. And it only does it sometimes. Driving me insane also.
