Default Remove/Replace Oil Pump

What kind of effort am I looking at here? Any "How to's" drifting around the net?

My oil pressure is only 35 at about 30% throttle, around 25 at cruise, is about 40 at cold start-up, and drops down to about 10 at idle when the engine is hot.

I checked with a mechanical guage, so it is not the oil sender/sensing unit going bad. I hope it's not bad... the pump just seemed to be the next thing to check

Check ls1howto.com , look in the H/C install page and scroll down.

Have you had the car apart lately? Maybe all it is is an incorrectly intalled or worn out o-ring on the pickup tube.

Or sadly enough, maybe the pump is fine but your motor has worn bearings and they are causing your low pressure. How many miles on the motor?

its pretty easy to do, just a little time consuming, imo the hardest part is messing with the crank pully, always hated that part.

It shouldn't have worn bearings (not a lot of miles on this built engine), but I hope I haven't spun one at the track.

I want to put the best part I could get in there, as long as it doesn't take a bunch of other modifications. You have any suggestions? This is exactly the other question I wanted to ask.

Thanks!

I have a modified (I use that term losely) ARE pump that has done fine. It is basically teh stock pump with a different spring and the pump has had the burs removed. Not sure if ARE is still around or what their quality is like. I have had the pump for 3 or 4 years now.

I think I would just do the stock unit if I had to replace mine today.

Thanks, wizkid.

I've also heard, unless you plan on REGULARLY reving over 7000 RPMs, a higher volume pump only risks depleting the oil pan at certain times. I don't know. I'm inclined to do the stock pump.

Stock ported pump then shim the spring for a little more pressure.

There's a little writeup for it on this page.

I've got 12k miles on it now and it is perfect. Oil pressure is at like 40psi idle, 40-50psi while driving, then goes all the way to 70psi at WOT. You can also start running a truck oil filter. These are a little longer and have more capacity, which equals better flow. I run a K&N #2006 and noticed a slight boost after switching from ghetto-*** Frams.

LS6 oil pump for me....worked great ever since I changed it 3K ago....

Just make sure you oil that new o-ring up good before you put it back together....and make sure the pick-up tube is lined up right with the pump...

Don't want it to get pinched and have to tear it back down...
