Unhappy bad rings??

I recently took the pcv system off of my car to get rid of my oil consumption problem. I notice that shortly before my car began smoking from under the hood. I now have a breather on the oil filler and it has quite a bit of smoke coming from it. Enough where if the hood is closed, it comes out from under the hood and looks like my car is on fire. It's bad and I think it's probably a lot of blow by from bad rings. Am I right? I have never sprayed the car, but I think the guy who own it before me might have, not sure.

I agree, add a catch can to your pcv setup.

I think I had the worst "bad ring" problem in history. 30-40% leakdown on all 8 cylinders and I didn't have any smoke at all coming from the oil fill cap. What I did have was puffs of clear colored air coming from it like a 200mph leafblower when I revved it.

I think you have another problem.

I'll pull the valve covers off, check the valve stem seals and then go from there.

Im having the same problem on a TA im working on, Each time you start or drive the car the intake/TB would fill with oil, Im talking about puddle badly. Deleted the PCV, & now it just smokes from the breathers very badly. Im going to do a leak down test on it to see where the problem may lay. The car Im working had a bad NX experience about 6 months ago, so Im suspecting bad rings on the #7 cylinder, beings that the driver side smokes way more then the pass side. (Two seperate breathers)

I've been suspecting that my car has been sprayed before but I was never told before I bought the car. I just notice the stock bellows between the MAF and the TB had a whole in it right around where a jet would go, and the car never had the power it should have. So I'm thinking it had a bad nitrous experience from someone who didn't know how to use it. I'm gonna tear the engine down and find out.

Id have a leak down test done first before I started tearing it down.

good idea. Almost forgot about that one. Compression test and leakdown test before anything else.

Best way to check for free is to start the car then pull the oil fill cap and put your hand over it. If you feel air trying to push your hand away you have blow-by which means bad rings. If you feel vacuum there it is another problem. If you get good vacuum there then I would look into exhaust seals. Do you know if the guy before you ever did any work on the top end. I had a friend with this problem last week. I pulled the springs off and found several intake valve seals on the exhaust side valve and visa versa. Pulled all the seals and replaced the correct way problem resolved. His would puddle in the intake to so you might want to look at those seals. Check for vacuum at the oil filler first.

Well I'm gonna do a compression check and a leakdown test because I definitely have pressure when the oil cap is off. I'll update tonight after I test.

Do you have vacuum or pressure pushing your hand away?

well i didn't actually do your test but i have smoke pouring out of there with the oil cap off, so i must have pressure if i had vacuum it wouldn't be pouring smoke.

I am sure your leakdown will tell the story. I took apart an 29,000 mile motor out of 2000 ss that will kill over 1 quart in 300 miles with no pcv hooked up. It had decent cranking compression 200 ish but leak down was bad, 15-32% car was high 10 sec car that never saw nitrous or a helper of any kind, it got mobil1 every 2000 miles(motor was spotless inside) mti x1 cam and cnc ported ls1 heads, made 420rwhp with a4. Everything inside the motor was perfect exept for the rings were razar sharp and the sleeves in the block were destorted. I think the motor was pulling oil from the pcv system and over time and the burning oil screwed up the o2's and the computer started adding fuel and fuel washed the rings on top of the cylinder sleeves destorting. We disconnected the pcv and routed it to a catch can and installed new o2's, but it was too late. I know of a combo that is almost identical, slightly smaller cam and makes 20 something less hp in an 99 c5 with a4 that runs flawless with twice the miles using stock ls1 pcv system. anything is possible. Your leakdown will tell you if your shortblock is done or not.

That is the exact same thing the TA im working on is doing. Both filters on the valver covers are pouring smoke, also when I pull the dipstick out it also keeps pouring smoke out, Im pretty sure the #7 cylinder is gone in this one. before it started all this, that cylinder was about 17-1psi lower then the rest. The guy pulled out of a parking lot, then sprayed it. the motor was turning maybe 2500rpm. Blew the intake, MAF, whisper lid all apart. bent some vlaves, broke the Oil pressure sending unit, bent the TB blade and who know what else its done yet. Ive replaced the heads, valves, rockers, intake, TB, MAF, whisper lid & now all this started. Like you, Im waiting to do a leak down & compression check. Hopefully I can do it before the end of the week.

Tested my car last night with the leak down tester. Everything was fine until I got to cylinder 5. Set the tester @ 100 psi and had 85% leakdown. I had the valve covers off and you could hear the air coming out of the engine and you could smell the oil vapor as well. I'm gonna tear it down to see what happened but it looks like bad rings.
