How to get 500 rwhp
I have had my 2000 ss 6 speed for about 1 1/2 years. I didnt plan on modding it but some one stole my 521 rwhp rx7 so i would like to get my ss up around 500-550 rwhp. What would be the best way to do that. I would like to stay with the ls1 block. Thanks for all the help

even a radical heads and cam package won't get you 550 rwhp on the stock shortblock. you can get close to 500 n/a, but personally...i'd run a decent heads/cam package with a 150 shot, that will get you over 500 easy and retain driveability and still give you strong n/a performance.

depends on what your doing with the car and if you want to stay n/a or FI. is it a street car or a track car?? i say go forced induction. to get 500 rwhp n/a wouldnt be very streetable, or even gas friendly in my opinion. with a turbo or supercharger you can get smooth streetable power on demand that wont bite you in the wallet($5000+ for a ls2). check the forced induction section and read some of their sigs, they are making 500+ hp with bolt-ons and upgraded fuel system. this is just my suggestion. it may not be as impressive as a n/a setup, but you cant complain with what works.

346 LS1, TRex cam, AFR 225s milled, .040 gasket, 90/90, forged everything, 200 shot
LSx 402 stroker or LQ9 408, ETP 245 heads, full (huge) roller cam, single plane intake
Forged LS2, low compression, some serious heads, forged everything, two turbos, FMIC
LQ9 408, forged everything, 245 heads, blower cam, 2 turbos, 300 direct shot
There's a few options.

The 440-460 range is easy to get to, just have to get the right combo of parts. 500 na with stock cubes will not happen and have any street ability. Good heads and cam with long tubes, no cats, ugraded fuel system, great tune and some compression will get the job done. As far as intakes go, my power was made on an LS6 and a ported stock tb. Unless you go with forced induction 500 is just out of reach.

I got the numbers in my sig on a non-dyno friendly day...(read 90+ degress in N. Alabama humidity)
I was told that 440 might have been possible if the conditions were better....
Mods are in sig....
500 on the stock displacement is going to be tough though...

I made a touch over 500 rwhp thru a-4 with an 370, ls1 heads, ls6 intake, and stock ported throttle body. Motor looks stock, however, it is a radical motor, streetability is marginal, no cats, true 3"duals, 1 3/4 full length race headers, etc. The heads and intake have a bunch of work in them. If you are paying for someone to build the motor for you and budget is a issue, go with an iron blocked 408 with good heads and intake if budget is a little looser then go with a big bore alluminum block and build a 427. Keep the motor big and use good heads like afr 225's, and 90/90 intake, you can make the power with a streetable cam 235-240 @ .050 on 112 sep. The 370 I built will run with the best of the big inch motor using heads and intake nobody else wants but it took a lot of good porting, a radical cam (similar to trex) and an 5000 converter. To do this with a 346 is possible but it will be so radical and high mantainance(solid roller) you will wish you would have spent your money differently. Even a 383 out of a stock block is going to take a wild cam/head/intake combo to hit 500 rwhp. Remember, m-6's will dyno higher when looking at other peoples combo's

Good points. Pro Charger can get your heads/cam power levels (over 400 rwhp easily) with no other serious mods.
I would like to add: Why are you set on a certain power level? How quick/fast do you actually want the car to be? Dyno numbers, by themselves, don't mean jack ****. It's what you run that matters.
I think you should consider nitrous. A heads/cam, stock displacement (346 or 347) engine with FAST 90/90 and nitrous is one heck of a great combination. You can make 440+ rwhp (M6, less in A4 but would be quicker) naturally aspirated and 600 rwhp/500+ rwtq on the bottle.
If you can't "settle" for a stock displacement heads/cam that makes 440 or so you need a power adder or big cubes.
Edit: Don't forget supporting mods. Suspension, rear end, clutch, etc.
