Default thicker oil better for highway trip?

I was thinking about changing from 10-30 Mobil 1 to 10-40 Syntec before I take a trip. Would it be better for the engine to have the thicker oil in there. It is like 100 degress here also.

Well, I would try the M1 0w-40 first, if you can find it. Weight wise you should be fine with 10-40. But you really don't want to go too far off the recommended 10-30. The engine tolerances on new cars require them to run what the manufacturer recommends.

Run Castrol (ONLY the "Made in Germany" bottle) Syntec 0W-30. It is closer to a 40 weight and is actually thicker at operating temp than the 0-40 Mobil 1.

On this website they say the 10w-30 Mobile 1 is too thin for this engine and it more like a 20 weight. When I was using the 10-40 Syntec I did not have the engine noise I have now.

if noise is your concern id stay as far away from m1 as you can, once m1 hits 1,500 miles is like water.. castrol is a quieter oil, as is royal purple 10 w30 id use the rp its the best i have tried sofar, its pricey but it was deffinitely a vast improvement over m1 for me.

What kind of oil pressure readings do you all get with the thicker oil? How about GC 0-30W and 5-40W Amsoil?

well, i would not say that m1 "is like water". I've seen oil analysis where it loses a little viscosity. I've gone 9000+ miles between oil changes (mostly hwy driving) and am doing fine. Calling royal purple better tham m1 is a huge stretch in my opinion. Go to bobistheoilguy.com , and check out the oil analyses there. As mentioned before, German Castrol is liked by a lot of people as well.

my oil pressure is at 40 psi at 500rpm's even hot its at about 38-40. for me rp is better because i dont like noise, my engine runs alot smoother on the rp.

if you say so but i think 15 psi drop in 2k is alot more then " alittle" when i first put in m1 it was usually about 30 35 psi at idle until after i put about 2k miles (m1 at 20psi at idle) the pressure at idle would only go lower the older the oil got, where as my rp i have yet to see any noticible drop in psi and i put about 3 k on the rp sofar...

If you're constantly in high temp locations (like desert SW) the thicker oil may be better. GM told the Bondurant school to use 15w-50 weight oil in their school cars (Z06s, CTSVs) after a couple of LS6 engines expired using the OE 5w-30 weight oil.

I have tried 10w-30 oil (M1, RP) and have found that the engines got noisier rather than quieter. Happened in both my Z and my 6.0 Silverado. I still run 5w-30 in both year-round.
