Default Mobil Clean 15000?

So I know it says that I can go 15000 miles between oil changes in the commercial and on the bottle. Here's my question, on a bone stock LS1, (minor mods in sig) can I safely use this stuff for 12000 miles? I've been using Quaker State Synthetic Performance blend 10W-30 for 3K miles and hot idle oil pressure is ~ 55psi, but after driving long distances and taking the oil fill cap off a little bit of smoke comes out, I was a little more than nervous driving the rest of the way home. It does not seem to do this after short trips (20 minutes ~ 10-15 miles). Water temp is at about 200 degrees. My reason for wanting to change is it's cheapier to only buy oil every 12K than every 3K (assuming the oil is less that 4x as expensive). My main concern is, how long will the oil filter last? What oil filter would you all recomend? Sorry for the novel and thanks for the help.

Well, I dont know about everyone else, Im sure no expert. But I can give my experiences with it.

My mom drives THOUSANDS of miles in a week. She is a Pilot Escort. She basically drives in front/behind the "Oversize Load" trucks and makes sure they will make turns etc. We live in Michigan and she drives to florida, cali, canada, Right now she is on her way to NJ.

Well her last truck a 2002 Dodge dakota just wasnt up to the task, trans had to be rebuilt FOUR times. She sold it and I pleaded with her to buy foriegn. I dont really care what anybody says, I believe strongly alot of the foriegn trucks motors last longer. Anyways...she got a 2000 Toyota Tacoma Pre-Runner...3.4 V6, TRD tiny lift from factory, blahblahblah.

Knowing she drives for more then 3,000 miles at a time so she cant always change her oil then. I said to myself, hmm what to use? I then saw the mobil clean 5000 Commercial. So I headed to Autozone and saw "Mobil 1 7500" ...Claims to protect for 7500 miles. So I tried it out...I used a AC Delco Oil filter. Around 7k miles later I changed her oil and I couldnt believe my eyes....The oil looked BRAND NEW. It smells brand new, felt brand new..I then cut open the oil filter and checked it out...it was time to be changed but not dangerously worn. I have used Mobil 7500 for the last 5 oil changes in her truck she has put over 35,000 miles on it in about 2 months. Some times she couldnt get the truck back to me by 7,500 miles and she even went to around 9,000 and the Oil still looked fine, same with the oil filter! The stuff works absolutely great for her truck and she has drove for over 20 hours without stopping for more then a few minutes for the bathroom with NO problems with the truck. This truck hasnt had a hiccup and I honestly think its the regular schedule of good oil changes and the only other thing I have done was a Trans cooler. I dont know if Id trust any oil for 15,000 miles...well atleast on an LS1. To be safe I would run 7500 for 3000 miles then change the filter and top off 1/2-1 quart that you lost. Then completely change it at 7,500.

Hope this helps.

Chad

FYI I used 5-30 in her truck, its what her motor called for.

thanks I'll definately swap the filter every 3K and i like to fill the filter with oil before i install it so i shouldn't need to put that much into the top of the motor, but what I really want to know is if anyone has used this in an LS1?

For what it's worth:

http://neptune.spacebears.com/cars/stories/mobil1.html

you'll get a lot of ppl pushing the german castrol which has very good oil analysis results. however I did burn more oil with gc, so I switched back to m1.

Everything with a grain of salt perhaps?

I see no reason to swap filters every 3K miles. IF you want to run it to 12K miles, pull the filter at 6K and see how it looks, if it looks fine, then you can run the filter for 6K or more. I would think that with the oversized filters the oil would be dying before the filter.

Well If you drive it hard every 3k should suffice. Hardly driven maybe 5-6k. Maybe...

It's kind of an apples and oranges thing unless someone drives their car on just long easy cruises like losiguy explained. For that application, this oil obviously holds up well but I'm not sure you can compare that to using it in an LS1 that gets driven (and I mean driven, not granny shifted to the store and back). If you are an easy driver and rarely ever take it past 4k then this oil should suffice for a while. If you actually drive your car, then I'd stick to the 3k intervals and use a more common oil like GC or M1 depending on your preference. As always though, the main goals are to periodically check the levels and the look of the oil regardless of how long it says it can be run and how you drive your car.

the smoke when you pull off your oil cap is called "vapor" i have no pcv and i have a breather on the valve cover and it "smokes" the whole time the motor is running, dont sweat that
