Default Anyone do a stroker in their garage?

I'm considering doing a stroker like in the GMNTP article.I'm on a real strict budget.One shop I called quoted me $3-$4000 to assemble the short block if I supply the parts.I can do pretty much anything on a car but I've never built my own shortblock.I was considering a kit I seen on ebay.IS there anything I should be leary of?Is it worth the savings to do it myself?Just looking for advice.

$4000 to ASSEMBLE a shortblock?? Geeeeezus thats nutz.

Yea, I did it in my kitchen...free as well. Whew...

I just assembled a 408 in my garage....forged bottom end, rods/ pistons....CNC'd heads ....$6K....now if I could only figure out why I have no oil pressure...

I'm a know nothing and I put mine together. Just keep everything clean and dust free. Measure your clearances and torque to specs. You'll learn tons and wonder why they were charging so much. I'm not saying it isn't worth it for a quality shop like our sponsors to put a shortblock together. They do a great job I'm sure. I'm just saying it isn't rocket science, just a lot of attention to detail.

I'm (slowly) building mine in my garage. You can buy short blocks already assembled from several sponsors cheaper than what itwill cost you to get the parts. Check TSP & Speedinc.

Well that's what I don't get.The GMHTP article uses a lunati kit that cost $3800.The guy that quoted me the price to assemble the shortblock told me that The places that sell affordable shortblocks use inferior parts.What's the best balance between affordability and quality parts?

Just buy a 402 shortblock from sdpc or texas speed. proven performers for a good price.

The Lunati kit is probably the best thing out there, but really not needed unless you will be pushing some serious HP. The bad press with Eagle was with their early cranks. I went with Lunati, because I got a hell of a deal on it (better than I could get from Eagle). Its actually too bad that I'm using it on my over honed 97 block, becuase I cant add a power adder to it, like I could if this was in a later block.

Anyway, check out the sponsors like mentioned above, they have some very good built short blocks that will work for you. Use that money that you'll be saving toward some good heads and intake.

The above was good advice. Now that I got the building my own motor thing out of my system (it's not all that hard, but a good learning experience), I have no desire to do so again and you really can buy decent shortblocks from the sponsors. I just got a 427 from Scoggins. They're good folks.
