Default Short/long head bolts are determined by ???

I was/am reading on this phenominon and it has me curious. Of a block is flat all the way across the head surface, I would assume the only change in style bolts would be due to the head casting being differant. All I have read so far is that it depends on the block??? Can someone shed a little light, while i am surfing for the "smoking gun , lol" and explain this to me please? The only thing I have gotten to is "GM changed to all small bolts in 2004".

I don't know if I would call it a smoking gun, but the change was made during model year 2004 for both the LS1 and LS6. The problem is some cars got them and some didn't. The change is actually in the block, not the cylinder head. All LS2's have the smaller bolts. Gm did the same type of change mid-model year in 2005 for the LS2 PCM, crank reluctor wheel and cam sensor. I've never seen a VIN cut off list for either (don't know if one even exists) so that makes it harder to indentify them.

It's not the head casting that has anything to do with it, it is the block. To me it seems the further the head bolts go into the block the stronger things will be. That being said even the 6.0L iron block got the shorter bolts in '04.

well, i have read some post from people that have used the wrong bolts and say they stick out 6" before tightening.

Well, I just found this http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/LS1-e...spagenameZWDVW

So, seeing these, I am to assume, and will find out shortly, that the longer bolt hold did NOT have the threads close to the surface of the deck, as there is only 3"? of wear n the thread bolts? Guess they changed it to help sealing issues?? Guess that would make sense.

That dumbass should be shot. Selling used head bolts.

Anyway....about the head bolts....This seems to be showing up more and more often with new engines. I found this out when I went to put my 383 together. I wish the builders would let people know this. Talk about being pissed

My friend drove around to 10 or 11 dealerships the next morning to pick up enough short bolts.

Not coming to his defense, but, either he didnt know they are TTY bolts or need to give him props for trying to make a buch while putting a foot up his ***. Might even email him to tell him and see if he does the right thing.

I would have never thought they woulda drilled and tapped deep into the block, unless the long bolts were the ones up top.

That was one on my first questions when I got the 370. It was confirmed by LME that it was a 2005. but instead of messing with bolts i put on studs.
