Different rings in an 01?
02's got the Napier rings with slightly more pressure as well. On the LS6, they started immediately in 02 production, the LS1 got them a couple of weeks later so a very early 02 will have the earlier rings as well. The new pistons came in March of 01 so all 02 production and later 01 production got the new pistons.
Not sure if you already own the car, but if you are shopping for one (I see your Mustang photo) than I would opt for an 02 if you can find one. Here is a link to the explanation on the rings writen by Hib.

I just got off the phone with my friend, who has a 01 WS6 made in 7/01 She told me according to teh GM dealership starting in 7/01 production they used the new ring package with the Napier 13# oil ring. She also has had her engine torn down and disassembled (planning TT setup) and visually verified that her car DID HAVE the napier rings in it. Whats up? Anyone have anything to contradict this? both her and the GM dealership she delt with verified that the new rings were used in ALL LS1's! starting in the 7th month of 01.

Sorry to be a dense one, but the 02 production will still be an 01 model? confused* It will be an 01 Z28 but have the 02 stuff in it, starting 07/01 ??

They are the same except for the oil ring which is 13# tension and has a different scraper profile called a "Napier" face or profile. The 99 is conventional and has 9# tension.
The ring change was done per the Corvette production schedule. The Corvette model year change is actually in late June of the year prior to the model year, so the 02 production actually started in late June/early July of 01. Thus, the new rings went into the motor in July of 01. Now if the f-body production change is for example in September, than the 01 f-bodies produced in July of 01 as 01 model year cars probably got the new rings since the engines all come from the same plant.

Ls1 F-bods according to an article I read "got the rings a few weeks after the Vettes' " And that would make it 7/01 IIRC. I understood YM02 to be ONLY 2002 VIN'ed cars. Apparently, and thankfully, I was wrong and it includes late model 01's and I can find out if it has it or not by looking at the door sticker. If you look at my poll you would be stunned at the results. It seems the ring package is doing its job all but perfectly. On your poll, make sure those responding also have the stock PCV system, even though the PCV system allows oil through it when you mess with it the oil consumption seems to get a lot worse.
