Default Pushrod Q - Will I be alright?

I purchased a camshaft kit from TSP with a 220/220 114lsa .581" cam and 7.4" hardened pushrods. I've also purchased a set of brand new LS6 heads, the one's they sold before the PRC line I guess.

Will I be O.K with this pushrod length, cam and head combination? I don't think I'll have a problem due to the small size of the cam...but figured I'd ask anyway. Don't want to F up my motor any more. Thanks!

Hey Rick, get a hold of a PR length checker and measure. They cost $20, or maybe borrow one from someone local. I'd hate to say you're OK with 7.40" and then have something bad happen.

I might be up at NED on Oct 13th and I could bring a PR checker and let you borrow it.

If your heads are unmilled then run a .040 Cometic. That will make the 7.400 fit better.
Otherwise unmilled with stock gaskets, I would run 7.425.

i feel like a newb saying this but...what's a cometic?

Is it possible to have the springs shimmed to a different height to accomodate the 7.4's I already have?

It's a brand of gasket. You can find them at Thunder Racing.

The only reason to shim springs is to help with spring pressure. That won't change anything in regards to the pushrod though.

ahhh. Gotcha.

So. could I pick up a length checker locally? If not I'll probably just order one through a vendor and have it overnighted. Also, for the price of some new pushrods, wouldn't I be better off getting those versus buying $160 gaskets? I understand they can increase compression. But is it really worth it for my application? I do have a fairly mild set up. Thanks again guys! you all rock.

I doubt you can pick up a PR checker locally. I got mine through Thunder. I'd do as Predetor recommends and get the .040 gasket. You'd be surprised how much compression helps with power.

Why are longer pushrods needed, with stock heads, stock gasket and just high lift camshaft?

I have installed Comp Cams 224/230, 0.581/.592, 114LSA using stock heads, stock gasket and stock length Comp Cam's pushrods. Have not started the engine yet. Is there anything to worry about?

Because the lowest point on the lobes (base circle) of your new camshaft are lower than on the stock cam.

Don't panic guys, 7.400 p-rods will work, they just will make your motor sound like a sewing machine (which a lot of poeple think it is normal). Longuer p-rods will get closer to original lifter preload and quieten that LSX down a bit.
