Default 6.0L Aluminum Heads Problem

Guys here's what I'm looking at.

I have a set of 6.0L D shape heads for the 6.0L we're about to install in my 00 Silverado, but I also have a local race engine shop with a set of ported & polished stock valve LS1 heads they will sell me for 1k. I think they flow'd like mid 280s at .500 so they aren't brutal flowing, but they would probably work nice.

Should I buy the ported heads or just shave the 6.0L heads & call them good? Joseph says we're going to do our own light port job on the 6.0L heads, but really he doesn't have the time to sit & port my heads. From a money stand point 1,000 isnt all that bad because I will be able to sell my 6.0L heads for about 400 so I'm only out 600 for ported heads....The cam we're going with is the 216 220 compcam

OPINIONS!!!

The ported LS1 heads will work a lot better, unless you really port the truck heads.

It really depends on the quality of the LS1 head port job. If it's a solid honest high velocity, etc. etc. 280cfm then that would probably work better than the milled 6.0. It could just as easily be a hogged out motion killing 280 which will be MUCH worse.

Does the head shop have any other examples of their heads out there for you to gauge their quality against?

I wouldn't do it, honestly. The LS1 head (any casting really, but especially the LS1 because of the revised valve angles, etc.) has it's own set of "tricks". They might be awesome, have caught them all, and have a set of heads ready to rock - but I wouldn't bet on it.

Flow numbers don't really tell the whole story is the problem though. Unless they will give you some kind of guarauntee I would say it wouldn't be worth it - to stick with your 6.0 heads.

I vote 6.0L heads. Not saying anything bad about the ones who ported them, I know them well. They DO know cylinder head porting and engine building better than anyone else I have ever met. They built 460 race engines last year alone, at least 40 of them were 960hp 555cid BBC engines that go for about 20K each.
They themselves have no need from a $ standpoint to do anything LS1 related and have been sitting on these heads for almost 2 years.
