Crank pulley only experiences?
Anybody have any bad experiences to report with just an ASP crank pulley? Any A4 charging issues, or any other issues that are a problem? Would you get it again?

Thanks Ragtop. Looks like I'll be doing that alone with the cam then...

I've got the ASP Crank Pulley only also on a '01 A4. Did notice that when I have the headlights on, the radio going AND the rear defroster on, that the car gets a bit 'dim' when sitting at a Stop Light. When moving or in Neutral/Park, you don't notice too much. I'm gonna get my idle bumped up to about 650 RPM and see if that helps. <img src="images/icons/smile.gif" border="0">

Re: Crank pulley only experiences?
I wonder if just doing the "trooper" mod, or turning the idle screw a turn or so would be enough...

Re: Crank pulley only experiences?
I have had both pullies on for about a week and a half now, and I have an A4.
I can tell you that heavy stop and go traffic is an issue, as the volts gauge goes all the way down in the yellow at idle. This hasn't been a problem for me yet cause I haven't spent a lot of time in traffic at an idle.. but....
I think I am going to put the stock alt. pulley back on over the long weekend. Having a car with charging problems was not my goal, and since others are happy with the just the crank pulley, I think I can live with whatever loss I get..
P.S. put them on a friends car too, and he saw no gain on the dyno just like Raughammer, but damn the car sure feels a hell of a lot stronger..

Re: Crank pulley only experiences?
Yeah, I think the only gain to be had with the pulley is the fact that the motor revs faster. I don’t think you actually gain any power, you just get to the power faster <img src="images/icons/smile.gif" border="0">
I'm going to drill the TB for the cam, and maybe raise the idle screw too, so hopefully it will charge enough at idle with just the crank pulley.

I have just a crank pulley, and it never gets below 13amps for me.
I would NEVER do this 'Trooper' mod if it involves putting anything on the TB. Just adjust the set screw, no ghetto mods like that on my car EVER.

Wow! Such hostility! <img src="images/icons/wink.gif" border="0">
I agree though, I'd rather just turn the screw.

Been there, done that, killed an alternator w/ that setup. Running just the balancer pulley now w/o major issues, idle output is just at 12V

Re: Crank pulley only experiences?
buddy of mine has one on his 98 SS and the only problems he has had is that sometimes at a stop light while he is waiting for the light to turn green the lights on the dash will dim just a tad bit. other than that he has had no issues and still on his original battery.

Here's the deal :
Just the Crank Pulley (948500) = K060760 for the crank and K040378 for the A/C.
Crank and ALT Pulley (948584) = K060770 for the crank and K040378 for the A/C.
I would also advise getting a new crank bolt and a new crank seal. Somthing like $10 for the two.

Re: Crank pulley only experiences?
I've got both pulleys. doesn't the larger asp alt pulley cause it to spin faster than the smaller OEM pulley?
anyway, i've no problems. M6

Re: Crank pulley only experiences?
I have both pulleys on my 01 SS, lunaticTA put them on.
I see just a small dip in the volts but nothing like his. Possible the M6 is behaving differently.
I do see a huge difference in take offs. This car just keeps pulling now. Wish I could have seen a raw number on the dyno though. There is no vibration that I am aware of, and if anything it spins up a lot smoother. Its a noticable difference.

Larger pulley on the alt makes for a longer distance for one revolution (slower), so if you have the stock pulley, you should actually not have any problems with charging, it just slows it down a little bit, not a lot like it does with the overdrive pulley..
Still trying to figure out why ASP calls it an alt overdrive pulley when it actually slows it down..
Since I have an A4, I idle at around 500rpm, alt doesn't like that much.. Hopefully idle will be up from that once I do the cam and get PCM tuned.
