Shorties Question...mod experts come on in
Hey guys question for you. I want to keep the Camaro (99 Z28) relatively quiet and 100% emmissions legal but boost horsepower and torque. $$$ is also an issue (ain't it always). Would a hooker do me (hmm...wrong forum) right. That is would hooker shorties and a catback make any substancial power increases. I know long tubes are the way to go but I'd like to not have to worry about baning, emmissions, or TOO MUCh loudness especially in the cabin. So let the battle rage on: are shorties worth it for someone like me. Lastly, who do you think I could get to install it in the CT area I just know I will not be able to handle an exhasust, SFC, and Header install without a lift and welder.
Thanks in advance!

You could do MACs and avoid banging issues, plus they’re almost as cheap as shorties. Any headers will pass emissions as long as you have cats (unless your state has visual inspections).
I was going to do shorities, but many talked me out of it. MACs are mid-length and most don’t have banging or clearance issues with them. MACs will make good power over shorties.

TTT! would shorty headers pass a visual inspection assuming the cats stayed in the same spot?

I used to have ceramic hooker shorties headers. And I did a before and after dyno. All I got was a 8 rwhp increase. Later the weld part at the connection to the y-pipe cracked open! Anyway, they suck in my opinion. If want them you could have them for $50 and you pay shipping, then you only have to weld that part.
Dyno info:
Stock
310 rwhp
+ Air led (MTI), K& N, and free mods
318 rwhp
Like above + Hooker headers and MAC y-pipe with cats
326 rwhp

If I were you, I'd go with MACs. The only concern you'd have at that point would be noise. It will be louder, but I'm not sure how much. Weld in two bullet mufflers in the Y-pipe and run it through a full catback and noise shouldn't be too bad.

Mac cats are notoriously poor. In tests, stock cats usually out flow them. I think the Mac cats flow about 290 cfm and stock cats flow about 300 cfm. I just put a set of Mac headers with orp on my car. I ordered car-sound cats to be welded in. They are supposed to flow over 420 cfm (I think the 3" ones flow 490cfm).
