Assuming you have the correct length belt then put the belt on all the pulleys except the water pump. With the tensioner in the loose belt position then slide the belt over the water pulley. This way you don't have to clear the flanges on the alternator pulley.

Re: How the %$#@ do I get accesory belt over tensioner pulley?
Larry,
Thanks for the advice! I am going to try that right now. Somehow, something so simple has turned into a nightmare!
I just changed the stock tensioner with the K-Tech unit, no problems! Then on the way home from my second "test run" the belt comes off and chews a few things on the way out . I order the gates belts from a local autoparts store - they did not get them I find a place 20 miles away with a Goodyear belt that supposedly matches the gates p/n.
When I go to change my a/c belt I discover my two a/c belt idler pulleys are chewed to **** Does this matter? How did this happen? When the other belt came off did it beat the **** out of those other two pulleys? So I decide to leave the a/c belt off until I get around to ordering new pulleys.
Put on new Goodyear belt and all is going well till I get to the tensioner. I can get the belt over half of the pulley but the rear half I was pulling my ***** off but could not get it over!! So decide to get smart I remove the lower tensioner bolt to allow the K-tech unit holding the pulley to slide all the way down. Then i put belt on no problem. I figure while I have the belt pulled I can slip lower bolt of unit in. Right? WRONG? So I pull a little harder - until - SNAP - I strip the divet in the k-tech unit with the ratchet I was using to keep it taught! This left the bolt half in the hole and trapped between the pulley and the engine
Now I get out of that jam - and pull the **** out off the bealt with my hands and get it half on the pulley _ a few taps of the starter and bam - I have two of the five ribs over the tensioner...AND THAT's when I called it quits!
Either I have the wrong belt or something else is wrong. I followed the pulley diagram to the T!
Could it be the SLP underdrive pulley (installed by cartek) is out of plane?

Re: How the %$#@ do I get accesory belt over tensioner pulley?
I replaced my tensioner and belt Friday. I did as stated above I did the waterpump pully LAST. I actually did the tensioner pully first, then crank, that guide pully, the alt. and then the power steering. I had my friend pull on the tensioner and then sliped the belt over the waterpump. If that doesn't work probably the belt is too short. The install took 10 minutes, the chevy dealer wanted to charge $95 for parts and $95 for labor 70 bucks parts and I did it myself.

I have always heard that to change a belt, put the belt over the smallest pulley first, and the biggest last. I've had good luck doing that on other cars, but I've never changed a belt on my LS1.

Well I'm not sure what exactly your trying to do but if you broke a belt and now your trying to get a new one on then....
The belt sytem on our cars has an automatic tensioner. you'll need to pur a wrench on it and load the tensioner enough to get it out of the way so the belt can go on....
I havn't had to mess with mine yet so I'm not sure what size wrench or what direction the tensioner need to move in.... I don't have my car out.... since it's f'ing snowing so I can't go look either!
But to answer your questionthe way I understood it), No it souldn't be that hard should take about 2-3 minutes, at the most, to do

oh yeah and if your doing all that and still having trouble i.e. the tension doesn't move far enough then try making sure you have the correct length belt....

I basically put the new belt on all 'way around underneath and then use a 15mm socket to hold the tensioner and walk the belt on... Very easy, have done it at the track too.

Re: How the %$#@ do I get accesory belt over tensioner pulley?
Thanks for all the help guys!! I ended up putting on the a/c belt with the chewed up tensioners. Then I put the stock tensioner back on with the belt I assumed was too small and BAM -it went right on! So far no problems.
