Default Is it bad to change oil every 2000-2500 miles???

I read an article on another board and a tech on there said its not good to change at 2k and its not good to change the oil at 500 miles (when the car is new)

I usually change my oil every 2,000 to 2,500...

This is the first bad thing I've heard about doing this??

So is it bad to do this?

I don't know why it would be bad for anything.... maybe not really needed, but I did change mine at 500 miles, then at 2,000 and plan on changing it every 2000 after that (I've got 3,000 now). I think oil and a GOOD filter are two of the best things we can do for our cars

My thoughts exactly...how is it bad to put FRESH oil in a engine...

I changed mine to Mobil 1 5w30 synthetic at 1000 miles..and change it every 2000-2500...

I got 10,000 miles on the car now..

if you got the money to spend one oil then by all means do it... i dont see anything wrong with it... i change mine every 3k even... sometimes sooner.. just depends on how long i wait the car set.. sometimes it takes me a while to hit 3k so i change it a little sooner

I couldnt see how changing oil every 2-3K after break in would be bad?? lol

However break in might be a different story. I have heard to change at 500 to get the metal shavings out, and then i heard to wait a little longer 1000-1500 so that the metal shavings properly help to break in the rings and cylinder walls. If you change to soon, some of your parts may never break in the way they are supposed to.

Maybe this is something to look more into?

Yikes!

There is no way metal shavings help break in the rings / cylinder walls! I think you might be confusing advice not to switch to synthetic oil until 1000 to 3000 miles rather than switching at the first 500 miles. The theory behind this is that synthetic is too slippery and will not allow the rings to seat properly. Many people do not buy this theory since vettes come from the factory with synthetic oil

For what its worth, I changed my oil at 500 and 1500 with regular oil and then switched to synthetic at 3000 miles. Was this necessary? Probably not, but its what I did.

You could not possibly damage your engine in any way even if you changed your oil every day!!!!

Your wallet would hurt and the tree-hugger environmentalists may not like you, but you're NOT going to hurt your car.

If 'metal shavings' were necessary for proper ring / cylinder wall break in, imagine this scenario - after buying your new vette / camaro / trans-am, the salesman says "Congratualtions Mr. Smith on your new purchase, here is a small packet containing metal shavings that you can pour into your brand new engine to help the rings break in properly"

I am old school, I dont understand synthetic oil.
I use dino oil ( casterol ). I never have let
the oil get dark.. I change somewhere 1500-1900
depending on what is/hasbeen/goingtobe going on.
here is an oil poll that I have showing what
others have done..

Have changed the oil every 3000 and she now has 42,500 on her and running like a charm (except for needing a new clutch!)

I change my oil every 5k.. I use synthetic as well. But my car is a daily driver 120 miles a day on the freeway. That is the only reason I go so long. I figure 1500-1750rpms for 5k miles isn't that bad. Hell I had a 1992 S-10 as well that I put 240k miles on changing every 5k miles with Synthetic and only problem I had with the motor was a water pump seal.. That truck is still driven every day by my dad who puts almost the same milage I did on it. About 100 miles every day. Still runs good.

I think oil changes depend on how you drive the car..

Dude, you are wasting some serious cash changing your Mobil 1 at 2500 miles. This **** is good to 10k plus and it used to say that on the container until they started going OEM.

I change my Mobil 1 in all cars at 7500 miles, but put over 100K miles on my 77 T/A, changing it every 12k miles.

i plan on changing mine (when i get the car) at 500-1000. But if it was sooo bad to have the shavings in there, why wouldnt the dealer reccomend to change it at that time?

Of course i think i heard the whole thing about the rough oil breaking in the rings ect. from LS1.com ahwile back, hmmm, maybe that explains it right there......

I change mine based on how I drive the car. It can never hurt to change the oil that often. For me it's usally between 1000/1500/2000. Turning 6800 multipul times tends to break down the oil alot!

Ditto ...
Only I use Havoline ....

60K miles
Lot's of 1/4 & 1/8 mile timeslips
2 seasons of AX
hundreds of miles on a road course

It's not the temperature breakdown of oil that kills the motor, it's the suspended solids the oil deposits as it flows through the motor. Flush it often and don't worry ...
