Default 2002 getting crappy mileage..

All,

I got a 2002 LS1. It has 2200 miles on it and I am getting about , if I am lucky, 200 miles to the tank. I got about 230 or so in my '98 Z28 M6 that had a T1, Macs, and every bolt on imagineable.

Any other '02 ownwers experiancing this problem??

WOW that is pretty bad. My 02 when new got around 260-270 per tank and now I get around 300 per tank. You might have a problem. Maybe you can take it in to have it looked at.

I just turned 9K. I have GOT to buy a beater. I have a M6 if you have and auto I wouldn't expect your car to get the same mileage as mine.

That's nothing. My 98Z that I just got about a month ago gets 160 miles to a full tank IF I'M LUCKY. Maybe it just needs a tuneup, but it runs fine?

"To a tank" - What exactly does that mean? Jack squat unless you say how many gallons it takes to fill up. 9 gallons? or 15 gallons?

I usually get about 22 mpg during the week (drive from Ft Worth to Denton, so lots on the hwy)...24 mpg on roadtrips the last 2 weekends (both were in the rain at night though, changing speeds a lot)...

OR...270 miles to 330 miles...TO A TANK

Approximately 13.8 gallons when I filled it last. I generally baby the car as well, not letting it go above 3k rpm in any gear. Every now and then I let her rip

It means. I get a check guages light, fill up with about 13.5 gallons. Drive 190 to 200 miles get another check guages light and have to fill up again.

Someone correct me if I am wrong, if I have 13.5 gallons and can drive 200 miles I am getting roughly 15mpg in the city.

Ok...I usually fill up with about 13.5-14 gallons and 270-300+ miles. 80% hwy, with the rest "spirited" driving off the hwy...

Are you driving mostly in the city? How heavy is your foot? Yea...your mpg is correct...I can see it if you're in town a bunch and rompin' on it. If not, something may be wrong...

I have a spreadsheet of my gas mileage for every tank I've run (6500 miles)

When my car was new I was getting about 180 miles per tank. That was combo city/hwy. Now w/ 17,000 I get 250 or so per tank.

I'd have it checked out Joel. I've got full exhaust, no cat-back, just about every bolt-on and I'm getting about 19 in stop and go traffic(183 twice a day) and 25 hwy.

I could atap it with you if you want to avoid the dealer. Email me if you want. My shop is in Irving - Lane's Wholesale Custom Wheel and Tire.

Under what conditions did you get 30 mpg?

I got 24 mpg with the cruise set at 75 most of the time, it was at night (lights up), and it was raining so I was speeding up and slowing down quite a bit. This was between Ft Worth and San Antonio, so it's pretty hilly. I'm sure I could've done a little better had I not used cruise...

I'm glad someone made this post. Joel we are getting about the same miles out of our cars. I have a 02' Z28. Our tanks have a capacity of like 16.8 gallons I think. The gage on our cars in inaccurate for fuel pump safety reasons (GM doesnt want you to run it out of gas). I fill up with around 13-13.5 gallons everytime with about 220-230 miles on it. I dont have a heavy foot and I do my share of highway driving. I think the MPG estimates that are on the sticker are off. At least for the 02's as I have seen. I have tried to drive my car diff ways and I get the same results. I have Loudmouth exhaust that is suppost to help a little but as you can see it really doesn't. So to answer your question, yes its normal at least to me.

My '02 is doing fine. It got 25.5 MPG to and From Bowling Green, KY in September, and that's what it stays as for all highway driving. A mix of 75% in-town and 25% highway nets 16-17 MPG for me with "normal" driving for the most part. There's always a WOT blast per tank of gas.
Everyone's driving habits are different, and that's what I'd attribute the mileage difference to.

So is my getting 160ish miles to 13.8 gallons or so normal? My car has almost 26k miles on it, and I got it when it had 24005, so its not a breaking in issue... I don't do much highway driving right now since I'm in between 2 malls and the highways are JAMMED.

I usually put about 11 gallons in at the pump, with somewhere around 170 miles on the tank. Now granted, that's only about 15 MPG, but my commute is all city, and I have a rather heavy right foot... On the freeway, I get about 28 MPG.

Thanks for the offer Lane. I have auto-tap myself. I need to run it anyway, as I was getting 17 degree's of timing @ WOT when this car had 450 miles on it. I got 2200 now, and seems to be waking up.. so.. we will see.

I have a M6...first 10k I would drive until the check gauges...then fill up...it was usually around 200. Now, at 16k w/ a cutout and a lid it went about 280....but it has gone down a little w/ the cam and headers. Btw, my father averaged 27mpg going 90mph on the freeway all the way for a 2.5 hour drive.

Mine is the same way. I have about 1700 miles on it and it seems to get around 14-16 mpg with about a 75% city and 25% hwy driving mix. With an occasional WOT blast. I satisfied, if I wanted gas mileage I would have bought a Honda .
