Default LS1 Cold Weather Problems, Help ASAP Please

OK, I live in TN so it doesn't get too cold here, maybe it's been down in the high teens, low twenties. The problem is, when it's really cold like that, I'll go out and start my car to warm it up, and a "chattering" sound comes from the engine.

This has happened the past three times I've started my car. Also, everytime this happens, my tripometer resets back to 0 miles. I've heard of the piston slap problem on the LS1s, but this is a chattering sounds, and the reseting of the trip has me wondering exactly whats wrong with it. It only happens on cold start up, like if the car has been sitting all night. If I drive somewhere like the mall, leave it sitting three or four hours, and then start it, I don't get this problem, only on cold start up.

Anyone else having this problem? What exactly is it? What can I do about it? Thanks in advance for any help.

Only on cold starts. Thats the same thing happening to me. It seems like the computer is reset because the speedo and rpm gauges both go all the way up then back to normal and the fuel gauge will read empty then go back to normal. and trip will reset. Have no clue what to do though.

Jeremy, I havent paid attention to this the last few times, but I know for sure from past times that when this happens everything (guages) go up really high like your talking about. Before this, the last time it happened was Thanksgiving, and just recently in the past three days it's happened. I'm going to go pick up the pizza I just ordered (Pizza Hut Meatlovers, yummy <img src="gr_grin.gif" border="0"> ) an I'll post back to see if it does it again.

BTW: My car has 53,900 miles on it.

This is a known factory defect and is due to the memory erasing in cold temps. I believe 200x models have it fixed and the dealer should be able to fix it for you.

Yes, please elaborate on that.

I just went and got that pizza, and it happened again. Its not the battery, all my radio presets and clock are fine, just the trip. Also, along with all the guages the MPH shot up to about 80-90 and then back down. So, this is something that I can take to the dealership and fix? I dont want to have to leave my car there overnight so they can tinker with it (I'm not too trustworthy of the dealership). Thanks for any help.

This happens every once and awhile to me too. Actually just today. The last time I washed under my hood it happened. This shouldn't do anything to hurt the car's performance, right? I just don't want to deal with the dealership if I don't have too.

My 99 Z28 used to do the same thing on cold mornings. My 01 Formula has never done it.

Are you guys getting the trip reset or the chatter too? I'm slightly worried about the trip reset, but the chatter has me concerned.

Don't know about the chatter but there is a TSB on the trip meter resetting. See "99-08-49-009 Trip Odometer Resets To Zero (Exchange/Install Instrument Cluster)" http://www.geocities.com/crackeregg/gmsi.html
