Belt keeps slinging off.... any ideas?
My main serpentine belt keeps walking off the front edge of the pullies.
It's already slung off and wiped out the A/C hose, A/C tensioner pulley, and A/C belt ($$$$).
The ASP balacer checks out tight as well as the smaller bolts on the balancer. I've eyeballed the alignment and I don't see anyting drastically out of alignment. I had the bottom alternator bolt out, but that's been that way for a LONG time and all the other alt bolts are tight. I forgot to check the pulley nut, tho.
The only thing that looks out of the ordinary is the tensioner assembly. The tensioner arm move maybe 1/8" side-to-side, but that may be normal, too.
The car has 40k miles.
Anyone have any other suggestions for me to check?

This started happening after your ASP pulley was installed? Do you have the crank only, or both?

I don't speak from experience but I think this may be your answer.
However, before you plunk down 125 for that, use a straightedge on your pulley faces to see if they are lined up. You can shim them with regualr washers from what I have read.

Ok, search turned up this...

and this...
https://ls1tech.com/ubb/cgi-bin/ulti...c&f=1&t=001098
As you can see, I fixed mine with some simple shimming of the belt tensioner. <img src="gr_images/icons/cool.gif" border="0">

Yep, I was looking around for it to post the link but I think I just about summed it up.

I have a lid and borla, no pulleys installed and it walks about once every 2 days. The tensioner arm has alot of slack from front to back, it only seems to come off the power steering and the tensioner pulley... <img src="graemlins/gr_cry.gif" border="0" alt="[whiner]" />

So apparently this is not just an issue with the use of ASP pullies, but even with some stock pullies?...

Re: Belt keeps slinging off.... any ideas?
Correct, this is not an ASP issue.
I put my washers between the tensioner pulley and whatever it bolts to (the passenger's head I think?) Just take a look. It's pretty self explanitory. You just remove the belt, remove the three bolts, add the washers (they have to be of a small enough diameter to be able to lay down flat), tighten down the bolts and reinstall the belt.
Two more tips for ya'll...
If you make the water pump the last thing for the belt to go on when reinstalling you'll be doing yourself a favor. MUCH easier to slip onto that pulley.
Use the shortest belt possible for a little added tension. This will also help to keep the belt in place. This may not be necessary after proper shimming though.

When you say shortest belt possible...are you saying that the stock belt sizes are too big, or that the sizes that ASP recommends after a pulley change are too big? Just asking incase I have any issues down the line...

Maybe you can see if Larry Sample will get another batch of the flanged tensioner pulleys made by ASP. These are stock tensioner pulley replacements that have a taller flange on both sides and ever since I had one put on, the belt has never been an issue. They cost about $50 each, but come with the new bearing pressed into them.
Larry? You there? <img src="gr_grin.gif" border="0">

When I say "shortest belt possible" I'm not making reference to whatever belt whoever recommends. Their recommendation may be as short as you can go. I mean it literally, the shortest belt that you can get to fit with whatever pulley combination you have, the better. Mine would be different than almost any of yours since the only thing my ASP underdrive pulley turns is the alternator (also underdriven) and the water pump. <img src="gr_stretch.gif" border="0">

Re: Belt keeps slinging off.... any ideas?
I got in touch with Larry Sample. He didn't have any of the custom tensioner pullies left, but he fixed me up with the details. I got with ASP to make me one off of Larry's original drawings.
ASP would discount the price if a large order could be placed (20 or more?).
I want mine now. I'm not gonna wait around for a GP. I'm still pissed at paying a few hundred dollars for all the A/C stuff that the first belt tore up. Not to mention $20 a pop for a belt. <img src="gr_images/icons/mad.gif" border="0"> At this point, I'm not too concerned about a few extra bucks for a custom order.

Re: Belt keeps slinging off.... any ideas?
I had the same problem too. My car only had 15K miles on it at the time. I ordered one of Larrys pullies also. Before it came in, I checked the tension of the stock pulley. Seemed weak to me so I changed it. Problem solved. It was so weak, I could change the belt simply but pushing the tensioner back by hand.
I still installed Larrys pulley and I would reccomend doin that also. It's a quality piece.

I did a new tensioner with Larry pulley too, haven't had any problems since. The alignment of my pulleys is perfect but when I started shifting at 6450 or so from stock, that's when my problems started. Now...all is good <img src="gr_stretch.gif" border="0">
