Default Besides the freeze plug and cyl head is there any other place to mount a temp sender

The reason I ask is because I have been tryin to put this gauge in for two days now. I had the Equus adapter for the pass side cylinder head and it sheared off in there. Well I got it out this afternoon then I tried the popular freeze plug location and it would not come out. I had a huge breaker bar on it and ended up breakin my craftsman hex socket and rounding out the inside of the nut it was so tight. So that is out of the question. Is there any other place that I might be able to mount the sender. I was thinking about splicing a piece of pipe into one of the hoses and threading the sender into that. I saw it done on an old muscle car in a magazine once. Any ideas or suggestions would be appreciated

I have an AutoMeter water temp warning light that's hooked up that way. Cut the outlet hose from the waterpump and rigged up a copper tee for the sender. I'd like to see the comments on this too.

wow I read somewhere that the freeze plug
was a bear to get out.
I like the idea of tapping into the water
hoses.. may even be able to tap into the
heater hose.. I assume the output side of the
theromstat would show internal engine coolant
temp pretty close.

They sell a thing at autozone that looks like it would do what I need it to do for splicing the rad. hose. Its a radiator hose repair kit with barbed ends and clamps included, the only drawback is that its plastic, I just don't know how long it will last if I drill and tap the sender into it, and i really don't want to worry about it crackin

I would go with the hose adapter. It's alot easier to work with. You could just buy a piece of 2"x6" aluminum pipe, drill and tap it, and there you go. Home Depot has threaded pipe in that size for only $4, and it polishes up real nice with a brillow pad, emory cloth, and Mothers. Looks trick!

I'm with ya on this one. I have water temp and oil pressure gauges waiting to install...

The oil pressure sensor may not be that hard.

The sender for the Y-Body (Corvette) oil temperature gauge is mounted in an aluminum cover (GM 12551587) that is located directly above
the oil filter. It has metric 12x1.5 threads that are not compatible with the AutoMeter sender's 1/8" pipe threads. However, the F-Body version
of the cover (GM 12551595) is not machined and it's easy to drill it 21/64" and tap it 1/8" pipe.

It's also possible to use the Y-Body cover. You can drill it 7/16", tap it 1/4" pipe and mount the sender with a 1/4" to 1/8" pipe reducer (available
at most hardware stores). However, the sender sits pretty high with this configuration.

It should not normally be necessary to replace the cover gasket (GM 12553210). It's a nice piece with a rubber molded to an aluminum flange.

Note that truck versions of the block optionally replace the cover with an external oil cooler assembly.

When installing the sender into the aluminum cover, use a sensor safe sealant and avoid over tightening as it's possible to split the cover with
the pipe thread's ever-increasing thread. This isn't a problem on the Y-Body sender since its factory sender uses straight cut metric threads
and a crush washer.

I had no problem with getting out the water jacket plug above the starter. I just used a 8mm hex socket with a regular rachet and extention. For the oil sender unit the housing above the oil filter works great. Just drill and tap and its good to go. I used it for my Oil pressure sending unit and I'm still trying to find a place for my oil temp sending unit, anyone know of any other oil port/plug I can tap into for this sender? I really didn't want to tap my oil pan, but I will if thats what it comes to.

This might have been misleading. I didn't tap into the radiator hose. I went into the outlet hose for the heater. I used 3/4" copper with hose clamps. The warning light sender is 1/2" NPT so I used a 3/4" sweat to 1/2" pipe thread fitting for the sender. I'm not sure how accurate this would be for a gauge, but I figured it would be okay for the warning light.

Just replaced water temp sending unit on wife's 91 5.0 Mustang. They come with the unit mounted in a pipe that runs along the pass. side top of motor for the heater. Only has small section of rubber hoses for heater at firewall and radiator, so the pipe idea should work.
