trip meter clears everytime I start car.... Ever since I changed trans for some reason the rip meter zeros when I start the car.....Has to be some wire???????????????

Re: trip meter clears everytime I start car.... If I recall, there was a TSB out for this problem in some model years. Do all your gauges max out when it happens too? I think that was another part of the issue. I think the fix was to replace the whole gage cluster.
I do believe that I’ve heard that a bad battery can cause the trip odometer to reset as well.

Fireball, I’m almost positive there was a TSB (I don't remember what years though). I also remember that it seemed to only appear in cars when it got cold. I read about this a long time ago on LS1.com. I doubt they still have any archives on it. Maybe someone has a link to all LS1 year TSBs?

Re: trip meter clears everytime I start car.... I bet a stronger battery would fix the problem. When you start the car with our weak factory battery's, the battery's voltage drops next to nothing and it clears the trip odometer.

Here is the TSB, but looks like NHTSA has upgraded there system so the information is messed up and does not have fix or detailed description of the problem.
Make: PONTIAC Model: FIREBIRD Year: All years
Service Bulletin Number: 79-I-52 Bulletin Sequence Number: 101
NHTSA Item Number: 44178
Component: INTERIOR SYSTEMS:INSTRUMENT PANEL:SPEEDOMETER ODOMETER
Basically they have to replace part of the gauge cluster or maybe the gauge cluster because the eprom that does the trip odometer is powered by the battery. If its cold and the car is not started but maybe once a week then it loses power. They replace the eprom with a flash type that does not need battery backup to retain its information.
