Default MTI T1 Cam, Isky springs...

Ever since getting my cam from MTI, I still have something bugging me.

When I ordered my cam, I made sure to nail them down about what springs I was getting, and was told I was getting the Kmotion springs. When I got the cam, I recieved Isky springs. I had a conversation with Jason through email, and he assured me they would be just fine, and I felt better. What's bugging me, is that just about every other shop (several sponsors here) keeps telling me that these springs are definately NOT adequate for the lift of the T1 cam. I wanted to spray with this setup, but one of the sponsors here even said to definately not spray the car with that combo because of the springs. Now, even MTI is not using these springs anymore.

So what IS the deal with these Isky springs? Are they good enough or what? I sure would like to spray, but am all spooked. I would certainly feel better if MTI could come on here and publicly state their position on these springs.

I'm not trying to bash MTI. They were good to me on the phone and shipped promptly, but I want to see some straight talk about these springs from everybody in this public forum.

I had the same concern's about the Isky springs with the B1 so I called Isky and they said the .558 lift is too big for that spring the isky 235-D spring is only rated for .550 lift. MTI told me the 235-D would work but you should let the engine temp get up to normal before juming on it which I do anyways but that being the case I didn't feel good about that spring with the B1 cam lift so Isky told me they would take my springs back in trade for their new race springs the 295-D which are rated at .600 lift. It cost me another $160 but they are great springs and I'll have that peace of mind the valve train is ok and I can still use the Lunati titainium retainers that came with the kit.

My impression is that the 295-Ds are probably the best single spring available for the LS1. Very pricey with the retainers.

We originally included the Comp 941s with our cam kits and saw an extreme amount of premature spring breakages just as everyone else did. We then switched to the K-motion springs and began to see a similar pattern just not quite as bad. We wanted to try soemthing new again, switched to the Isky springs, and saw very few spring breakages and were pleased to see how much more reliable they were than the original 941s.

We ended up switching to the Comp 918 spring to not only improve reliabilty even more but to help reduce the price of the cam kits for you guys here on LS1Tech.com.

With all of the Isky (235) spring kits we currently have out there, I have not seen or heard of a failure in months. I do truly believe that warming up the engine first before going WOT does help extend spring life no matter which springs your running.

If you have any problems just e-mail me and I'll see what I can do.

What more do you need bud?

Those springs are better than my old POS Comp 941s and I sprayed the hell out of that setup. Besides that, when you are spraying you should be shifting earlier (around 6000 rpm) and valvefloat is not as much of an issue compared to 6600 rpm on motor.

MTI is not using these springs anymore because the Comp 26918 springs became available and work nicely for LS1s. You should also be careful about how Isky rates their springs as far as lift handling, they typically use the installed height for small block chevy motors which are not the same as LS1 installed height.

Boy I had a "lesson" on those 941 springs and my T1. First time at the track..."whack" busted valve spring. Thank god the motor was fine.

still can't believe my 941s are living lol. and I don't and never have let them warm up to whatever operating temp is. the car does not even get to operating temp in this weather on the way to work.

I'm actually not that worried about breakage. I do wait until the engine FULLY warmed up before even thinking about nailing it or goign over 2500 rpm. I was just concerned about floating the valves. I'm getting ready to order some StageII heads very soon, but would like to spray with my present setup in the mean time. I won't be spraying over 6K anyway.
