Ordering Y pipe material right now, 2.5" or 3" on cammed car?
This is my last post on this topic, but I am going to have the exhaust shop order the mandrel bends for my y pipe, 2.5" would be easier to fabricate than 3", is the 3" going to give a noticeable gain over the 2.5" with just a 224/.561.112 lsa cam and intake stuff? Just need a quick response if possible

The 3 inch may cost you a little torque at the very low end but it should make up for it at the top. I would go 3 inch because you may later add some good ported heads, then you won't have to have another y-pipe made.

So when you say low end, are you talking 2K rpms- 3K ?? I like the low end torque, but if I am giving up a lot up top by going 2.5", I would rather go 3". i know that just a y pipe won't effect performance that much, but it does effect throttle response.

Someone on here recently said that they gained 6rwhp and 6rwtq going from a 2.5” to a 3” Y-pipe on their car. It had headers and I believe just a cam (stock heads). Might have had heads too though, not quite sure on that. I don’t think he saw any losses in low rpms that I can remember.
I’d go 3”.
I’d go 3”.

I live in jax as well and I was also thinking of a shop making a y-pipe for me. What shop are you going with and how much are they charging if you do not mind me asking. Also, I had abad experience w/ rainbow muffler on Cassat if that means anything to you.

I have to disagree, bigger isn't better in this case. I still run a 2.5" Y-pipe (FLP) on my car and it isn't hurting me a bit. I've tested several different exhaust setups on this car also.
I'd say you shouldn't consider 3" Y-pipes until you are at least 450 rwhp. Now, if you are running catalytics, then 3" might be okay.

I currently have the FLP 2.5" y-pipe but will be trying a 3" soon. I'll report back with dyno/track results.

Tony,
Obviously in my case I needed the 3" Y-pipe. However, I would have thought that you would have needed it as well. Did it not make a difference on your all-bore motor with the T2? I find that kind of surprising . . .

I think the mandrel pre bent peices are around $20 a bend But it is the only option unless you can find a shop with a mandrel bender, which in Florida is very hard to find.

I am having my y pipe made a Muffler City and Brake on Sunbeam Rd. in Jax. They are pretty good over there, email me if you have any questions about them.
Nineball: Do you mean that with 3" I will not gain much over the 2.5" or that I will lose power? I assume that the 2.5" will give slightly better low end response but I can't see them making that much of a difference since I still have my WS6 catback with a flowmaster in place of the stock muffler which doesn't flow all that well anyway.

Re: Ordering Y pipe material right now, 2.5" or 3" on cammed car?
I just had my 3" y-pipe made today. It is all mandrel-bent and looks just beautiful. You probably won't be able to find aluminized mandrel bends (or at least I couldn't), so I got some high temp aluminum coating paint (http://www.por15.com/hightempcoating...BrightAluminum) and painted the y-pipe. It just looks amazing. I should be getting pictures of it soon, email me if interested.
As far as power goes, I can't really say because my exhaust change was pretty drastic. I had 2.5" true duals and switched over to a y-pipe setup again. I was going to go with a 2.5" y-pipe, but was convinced to going with a 3" into a flowmaster 3" in/3.5" out collector.
I was worried about clearance at first with the 3" y-pipe, but to my suprise everything is okay so far. My car is lowered with the Eibach springs.

1) Just how bad is the Grot collector?
2) What would you recommend for a good streetable exaust considering this darn TP4400?
3) Is open headers the way to go on the dyno and at the track?
I like to change my exaust around about as much as you change your wheels.
