If you've had MULTIPLE EXAUST SYSTEMS.....
I need your recommendation. I currently have the 4" Mufflex, but with my mods it's a little too loud for daily driving. I want something throaty, with less drone than the Mufflex, lighter, and around $400 or under.
I have the Grot offroad 3" y-pipe. Should I start by putting in a FM collector? Is there anything to be gained?
I'm leaning towards the SLP20TL or Loudmouth exausts that can be easily removed at the track. How do they compare to the Mufflex 4". Your thoughts and recommendations are greatly appreciated. I know some of you have been exposed to before/after dynoes with different exausts.... how well do the above exausts flow and will I lose anything by going back to the 3"?

Re: If you've had MULTIPLE EXAUST SYSTEMS.....
I've had both the Random Tech aluminized system and the Loudmouth. I like both of them. The Loudmouth sounds a little more rowdy. the RT doesn't drone at all though. Both were under $400. I actually bought the RT used but it's close to $300 new.
I'm actually considering putting the RT back on whenever I do headers to calm the sound down a little bit.

The best sounding, highest flowing and lightest catback you can go with in 3 inch is the following:
Buy a dynomax mandrel bent intermediate pipe for a 93-95 F-bod.
Weld in a 3 inch cutout
Weld on a 18 inch dynomax race magnum muffler
Buy a 90 degree mandrel bent 3 inch pipe to use as a tailpipe and then use a chromed slashed tip.
VERY light, and very high flowing.
I ran 126mph in the 1/4 through this full exhaust with MAC headers and MAC 2.5 inch Ypipe. The int pipe and muffler/tailpipe came in under 150 installed
Cheers,
Chris

Re: If you've had MULTIPLE EXAUST SYSTEMS.....
I'll have to look at the Random Tech a little closer.
Chris:
Don't you think that would be extremely loud as well. With this stall and 4.10's, I've got to quiet it down. I can't drive 1100 miles to AZ next week the way it is. I would either fall asleep from the drone, or not be able to talk to my brother when I got there.

Re: If you've had MULTIPLE EXAUST SYSTEMS.....
I had the RT with macs and offroad Y, I later switched to the loudmouth with 1 cat in place of the resonator. The loudmouth was a lot louder at idle, and deeper too. At WOT I'd say both were the same. I bet the loudmouth will sound a lot like the mufflex you have now...so I think the random tech would be a better choice because it's quite a bit quieter cruising around.

The hot ticket is what I did.
dual cutouts after the headers, stock Ipipe, dynomax super turbo muffler. It's as quiet as stock, and flows much better. At the track we all run open exhaust anyway so who cares?

Re: If you've had MULTIPLE EXAUST SYSTEMS.....
geez...we are both in exactly the same basket.
I have the Mufflex 4" too, adn theres no way Im going to drive around my neighbor hood with it. Concensus is that there are 3" systems that work just as well on H/C cars. The systems I am considering are:
Corsa stainless or
SLP Dual-Dual
Both are stainless (its just MOIST up here, even if you dont drive the car in the rain), and both are quiet. If you remove the "cone of silence" from the SLP, its supposedly a bit louder and flows really well. The Corsa is supposed to be very nice, but on the Vette I thought Corsa'a made the cars sound like boats. Makes sense since Corsa's main business in Marine exhausts
Im going to put in the 2x 3" into a 1 4" Y pipe using the flowmaster D port collector, and there will be 2 Dynomax Bullets, one on each side of the Y. If this makes is drone less, I *might* (super might) keep the Mufflex, since the car is for little more than summer driving and Road Racing. I need the money for Brakes anyways.

Terry,
You should know ever since I ran the offroad y-pipe without an exaust, that I need a little more sound than stock.
I want to sound good on the street as well, but be able to get the weight off at the track to whip ya.

I got an error trying to open the pictures. Hmmm.... the "hooker" may be an option worth looking into.
Anyways, I'm not interested in a dual exaust because 1) it would have to exit out the rear of the car or it'll resonate too much, and 2) if the dual did exit the rear, it would be too heavy and just a pain in the butt to work around. I don't see any HP to be gained by duals, just noise or weight.

[quote]For a GOOD inexpensive system, try the Hooker. I have it on my wife's car and Jason99TA has it on his car. VERY good sounding and well priced.

Amen to that. For the price, there isn't a catback that holds a candle to the Hooker system. IMO, there isn't many catbacks that can hold a candle period. This exhaust is under 300 bucks, flows better than 99% of all other systems for the f-body, and is the best sounding catback I have ever heard without cats on an LS1. I have gotten probably 50 compliments in Atlanta saying that my car was the best sounding LS1 they'd ever heard(Mac, offroad, and Hooker). Not only does it sound great, it does NOT drone at highway speeds, and is very mellow around town. Nice deep growl, and when you floor it......simply musical viagra

Re: If you've had MULTIPLE EXAUST SYSTEMS.....
I have 3" piping from the Y-pipe to this Dynomax 3" muffler with a hidden turndown tip, just like the mufflex.
I had the mufflex 4" before, and I can say that my mufflex WITH cats is much louder than this setup WITHOUT cats.
My car can barely be heard idling in a gas station (and I currently don't have cats!).

i have Grotts,OR y-pipe stock I-pipe(cutout for track) and a single in/out 3in (2chamber)flomaster, no drone, tame idle but deep growl at intown driving but OMG mash ths gas and its loud, its good, it sounds nothing like the flowmaster for the stock replacment (singl in dual out crossflow) flows well to.

Re: If you've had MULTIPLE EXAUST SYSTEMS.....
I’ve had the Magnaflow system, and American Thunder by Flowmaster. The Magnaflow was way to quiet for me, but it was a really good quality, good flowing system. I now have the FM system and I’m getting ready to switch it out. The FM system sounds like crap when you run an ORP (I know this from experience), and I want to go back to an ORP, so I’m gonna get the SLP 2OTL. I’ve never seen a system flow any better than the 2OTL. Most have seen dyno and track gains with it over just about any other catback with a muffler (except maybe dual/dual). I’ve heard a couple of cars with ORPs and 2OTL and there is no rasp! Just clean, crisp sound. BUT, if you’re going to run cats than the 2OTL might be too quiet. It sounds PERFECT without cats though...

A couple of comments:
For the cheap systems, the Hooker sound very good and flows well. I cannot endorse it, however, as the construction quality is lacking - on my old one, the tips and muffler were rusted within a year, one of the exhaust pipes was misbent, and the U-pipe was rubbing against the heat shield no matter what I did with it. The system looks like a$$ also, but you can fix that a little bit if you put your own tips on there.
Chris ARE 360 and Terry Burger have some good exhaust ideas here. Do not know how they flow, but they are reporting good results.
Visceral: There ain't no way the Corsa sounds like a boat with the setup I have. People are raving over how my car sounds with it (I love it also). However, Corsas sound very different on F-bodies than they do on Vettes - has to do with the dual-exhaust x-pipe resonation on Vettes.
Jantzer - I would try some of the ideas above. If you have the dough, I would recommend a Corsa (for medium loud) or an SLP dual/dual (for quiet). Otherwise, I would try the custom setups mentioned above. The Hooker would sound/flow well and be cheap, but be aware of its quality and appearance issues.

Do a cut/paste for the pics. Geoshitties sucks.

Re: If you've had MULTIPLE EXAUST SYSTEMS.....
I have had like 10 different exhaust combos on 2 different LS1s.
The drone from the Mufflex IMO is specific to a 4" catback. I cannot get it to go away. I swapped off my Flow 4" and put on Dynomax like the one in Mgreen's pic and it's the same. But I can't beat how my exhaust flows...sigh
I think the dual/dual is the ticket to be old man quiet.
I think that the RT, Hooker, etc are all loud and but will not drone.
Triflo sounds very classy.
I currently run TTS longtubes, 3" custom ORP, and 4" mufflex with dynomax ultra flow welded muffler.

Re: If you've had MULTIPLE EXAUST SYSTEMS.....
Thanks for the help guys.
ProStockJohn:
You're running about the same combo I am, do you ever take your car on long trips, or is it a racecar? Some people around my neighborhood think I'm doing 200MPH up the hill by my house when I'm doing the speed limit. It makes me wanna get out and slap them for being stupid and then slap myself for not being able to talk to the girl next to me. Do you think the 3.5" Mufflex w/Spintech would be considerably quieter?
I'm thinking the SLP20TL will be the best for fit/finish/sound/price/durability. I think I might as well pay a little more than the Hooker and get a stainless system.
Does anybody know how much any of these exausts weigh?
That could also be a deciding factor.
