Default so, ported maf is good on a 98?

ive heard about all the leaning and this and that, and supposedly the 98's have the 28.6 lb injectors, so does this mean we(98 owners) can safely port the maf ends w/o worrying about pinging? tia...

Most 98 owners, myself included, had no problems running a ported stock MAF. If you've got an A4 though, be careful, recently Patrick G discovered that ported stock MAFs on an A4 causes the line pressure in the trans to be lower, causing premature failure of the trans.

And horrible shifting problems

It is not cool.

I had to buy an SLP 85mm MAF to correct my tranny woes with a ported MAF.

I run a ported MAF on a 98. Even with the big #7 Vig converter I haven't had any shifting or lockup issues. I haven't got around to checking my line pressure though, might switch back to stock ends.

i have a 1998 trans am ws6, 6 speed, and i have ported my maf and descreened it. I really cant notice a difference, in horsepower or speed. but i have had no problems at all with it. and i have heard the same you all have heard about 98's and how good it is to port them. the only thing i really notice is more response when i hit the gas and also i rev my engine and i hear a loud sucking noise, which seems really good because it acts like a vaccum almost. more air.. the better!
just my .02 cents!

How would the size of the injectors have anything to do with ported MAF ends causing it to lean out? Wouldn't that be a PCM function causing the lean condition by seeing less incoming air thus suppling less fuel? I wouldn't think it matters what size the injetors are..Anybody?

dan, from what i hear, the 98's run rich from the factory, so the ported ends will lean it out a lil, making it stoich. with the smaller injector'd cars, the porting causes the stoich/lean running cars to go leaner, increasing the chances of blowing **** up...i think?

Hmmm, never had a lean condition on my 00' after installing ported MAF ends, not enough to ping anyway and had 13.1 A/F. I can understand 98's running rich from the factory there for installing ported MAF ends may bring it more in the stoich area, but I still don't understand why injector size would have a factor in it. I thought the computer controlled how much fuel was added regardless of the injector size, the more air the more fuel. I know the bigger injector could handle more HP, but should have nothing to do with rich/lean conditions IMO, strickly PCM parameters should control all that. Again, I'm guessing here, so set me straight if I'm way off base on this, I just don't understand the bigger size injector= richer running concept..

never had a problem with ported maf ends on my 00 z28 and i've had it on their since the clock hit 2k back in 00. autotapped it a handful of times and the car never went lean. the air/fuel ratio was stoich. even with a 100 wet shot.

i ported mine (98 TA) and had to flip em backwards so i wouldnt ping. we think that i may have damaged my MAF in the time its been ported though (last atap showed .010-.300 O2's). I would stay with a stocker, just de-screen it. then do a MAFT for A/F. timing is the only thing you'll not gain by not porting.

i put ported MAf ends and a lid on at the same time on my 01 WS6 A4 and have had no problems what so ever tranny or running lean or anything else just got a gain in performance

BTW didn't GM go back to using bigger injectors in 01 again????

I didnt have trouble for a long time with my small TC but once I went to the bigger ones problems started to show and the only thing that fixed it was replacing the MAF. Maybe it doesnt happen to everyone though. I sure hope thats the case or else there are goign to be a lot of people replacing tranny's this year.
