Default Problems after H/C install(kinda long, sorry)

ok I had a place install stage 2 heads and the TR 224/224 112 cam into my car about a month ago. At first my car would drive around with blue smoke shooting out of it. That went away after about 70 miles. Now i was driveing about a week ago and the low oil light came on...I have put on about 700 miles since the install. I change the oil and find a faint smell of gas coming from it. I could also see it alittle. Now I would think that this is from it runinng rich. I could be wrong. Now the other day I was driving and I have a miss at WOT. Now could the OIL burning and the miss all be tied into the fact that the car is not tuned? I have an appointment in 2 weeks im wonderin wether i shold i drive my car around or is it safe to drive? Im sorry for the long post. Any help will be greatly appreciated.

I'm no expert but I'll tell you this.

Oil that smells like gas == 1 or more of your rings are toast.

Blue smoke out the exhaust == burning oil == 1 or more of your rings are toast

Miss at idle == many causes, but one of them is busted rings.

Pull your oil filler cap while the engine is running, you'll get air/smoke coming out of the cap if you've got busted rings (blowby).

I could be wrong, but you don't get gas in your oil from running rich, and you don't get blue smoke out the exhaust from running rich. Sounds like you probably should bring the car back to the guys who did the work for you, because they possibly messed up the car. Busted rings are badnews.

The exact amount would be at THUNDER RACING...i got there 224/224/ 112 cam and there stage 2 heads.

Is there a possibiltytaht the head gasket was messed up or that some valve stem seals are bad???

Sounds like bad valve seals to me. The leaky seals can cause a miss at idle too. I had a similar situation occur with my car when I upgraded to a H/C setup. There is no way that you cracked the rings. Sorry...but I think Dope gave you a dopey reason for the smoke.

You are probably running way too rich, gas in your oil is a indication of that. Good luck!

Have the shop do a leak down test for you. That will show if your rings or cylinders are shot. The heads and cam packages are only as good as the engine they are installed on. Also ask them if they made sure to clean out and lube the cylinders before installing the heads.

All of these issues can be a result of an overly rich condition. None of the rings are designed to clean the cylider walls of liquid fuel. After driving the car for some time you CAN damage the rings. The extra fuel washes the cylinder walls of the oil that is needed to lubricate them proprely. This can lead to excelerated wear on the cylinders and the rings them selves. You also need to make sure that the rocker bolts that protrude into the intake ports are "sealed" with silicone or teflon paste, so that oil is not introduced into the cylinders as it makes it's way around the threads and into the intake port. This is very common because, under the valve cover you have a small amount of positive crank case presure, and in the intake port you have vaccum.

Were the heads new or used? Who did the install and how long ago (miles wise) ?

The heads are from Thunder racing. I would guess that they are used. It has been under 1000 miles since the install...the oil burning is gettin worse though. Its really bothering me, my baby is gettin ruined

iron maiden, here are a few possibilities;

1, Are these heads fitted with dual springs? If so the spring seats might have broken through into the intake runner.

2, Was Teflon thread sealer used on the rocker bolts over the intake port? Oil might go past the bolt if it goes into the runner.

3, Was the car retuned after the H/C install or at least checked for A/F with a wide band O2 and timing? Without tuning, the engine might have pinged and you might have broken ring lands, or if it's running very rich it will fuel wash the cylinders and it will burn oil. I'm assuming the car was not burning oil before the H/C install.

4, You might have bad valve seals but if the heads have just been refurbished/ported, that is unlikely. Make sure the valve seals are in place.

5, Check the PCV system.

6, Was the engine without heads and uncovered for some time? Dust can do allot of damage and loves to collect on an oil coated cylinder wall(or uncoated for that matter).

7, Leak the motor down to find out if it's the rings.

Good luck, Julio.

I was going to take it down to cartek to get it tuned. I think that I should first find out the oil problem though before tuning it....am I wrong?

It sounds like sloppy work. Take it back to the shop that did the install and let them figure out what is wrong. Rings/compression loss is easy to tell if you know what to look for. More than likely its a valve guide/seal issue.

Actually I was just thinkin....Julio...can I take it down to you guys and have you look at it for me and do what is necessary to fix it, then have it dyno tuned? It would save me alot of time that I really don't have, and for some odd reason I do not trust the original people that installed the heads and cam. Thanks.
