Default Plastic timing chain guide on early LS1s

What is this thing called and will it work on a newer LS1?

I installed this one on my 2004 GTO

there are two different damper pn's one has bolt spacing of 2" and another is 1.7. One is quite pricey the other only $10.00......The PN I installed is: 012588670 after several calls and a fruitless trip to my local dealership, I scored one at SDPC.

so I assume that I will have to take it apart before I can know the one I need?

I am unsure of which PN applies to which year, you might give SDPC a call and see if they can sort it out for you.

I thought I saw those on C5 Z06 too, but it was a white color. Is it really necessary? Does it do anything?

Unfortunately, you need the more expensive one. When the set up for the LS2, the new damper came out. Also, on the 97's, some very early ones had a special damper. I know you put in a cam, so yours must not have had it. Did you take any photo's? Not all blocks are drilled and tapped for it, and if yours is not, you will need to do this keeping the chips out of the motor. If you have photo's that you took, you will see the holes. Here is mine, it is the GMPP version.

Do a search on the forum and on here, if I remember correctly the first couple of years all the blocks were drilled and then they stopped or it was hit or miss. Since its a 97, it may very well be drilled and tapped already. Also, check with Steve (CTCorvette) on the forum, he may have a better idea of which blocks have it already.

Does someone need a doctor, or is that just assembly lube?

I can't remember where or when, but sometime back I read a thread that talked about the timing chain whipping at certain RPM's (well under redline)leading to chain failures with sustained operation in this RPM range. Given that my block was drilled and the damper only $10.00 for my application I thought it cheap insurance.

Since then I have installed a QTP 2 piece timing chain cover and had to remove the damper as I could not see the timing marks on the crank gear with it installed. I went with a katech timing chain given their expertise with the endurance motors......

That's Redline Assembly Lube, my hands had stopped bleeding from the prior work at this point in the assembly process

By the way, that stuff is excellent and mixes with oil as soon as the oil hits it, no particulate in it either.

There are a couple of harmonics that carry the chain around the crank gear causing it to wrap and fail. GM didn't install it because they were saving a few dollars (according to one of the LS1 books out there, the bean counters got their way). However, I think it is standard on the LS2 and the late LS1 Vettes (04 model year) which uses the same one as the LS2's, but not the same as the earlier engines.

Also, someone on the Corvetteforum just put in a cam and found a GM damper that doesn't look anything like the ones above on his motor from the factory. It was a very early 97 car, I think the serial number was 300, which may have actually been a pre-production unit.

what about using that setup on a double roller chain?I been thinking about using this piece, but recently bought a double roller .I was thinking about putting a spacer behind it for each bolt to move it evenly across the chain..Does anyone think that will work?

Part 88958607 is for ls1 ls6 blocks and is $95.00 part #12588670 is for ls2 and ls7 blocks and is ten dollars? The prices should be the other way around!!!I was seriously going to use it but can't see $95 dollars for a piece of plastic.

They came down some!!!! The price is the result of the LS2 item being in production, the LS1/LS6 never made full production so they are a special item. Sucks as they are identical except for the bolt spacing.

Boy am I confused!!!!

I have two LS1 engines. LS1 I said, not LS2. One LS1 engine came with my 2004 GTO and it has a 2" bolt spacing. Cylinder head blots are the long and short set. The other LS1 engine is a GM LS1 block purchased from SDPC. It is a forged engine. I think these LS1 blocks they sell are Corvette LS1's. The second LS1 has a blot spacing of 1.7" The cylinder head blots are all of the short type.

part number 88958607 is said to be for LS1 and LS6 engines while part number 12588670 is said to be for LS2 and LS7 engines. Probelm is both my engines are LS1's with different bolt distances. Which part # is the 1.7" bolt distance one?

The early #88958607 (beige) damper has a 2.187 bolt center. The late #12588670 (black) damper has a 1.762 bolt center.
