Default engine tapping (quick question)

Originally posted on LS1.com

Like a lot of people on here, it sounds like my engine is ticking. No matter how much I complain nothing is going to be done about it. I always get the same response of "thats normal", but if its so normal why didn't it happen when I first had the car .

I heard people on here saying that they've replaced their lifters, and gone with LS6 valve springs and it seems that problem goes away. If I went this route and it solved my problem, could I go back to GM and say that I've fixed the problem (even though it would be their mechanics doing it) and ask to be reimbursed for the labour of the job and price of the parts??

Any light on the subject would be great

Thanks
Gary

Do you have any more in-depth info on your ticking? Does it vary with RPM's? Where does it sound like it's coming from? When did it first start? Have you checked your pushrods? How's the oil level?
As for reimbursement, I definitely wouldn't hold my breath. I don't see ANY dealership handing over money.

It's pretty noticable anything over 1500 RPMs. It sounds like its coming from the passenger side valve cover. Pushrods have not been checked, but I've never missed a shift only bounced off the rev limiter. and the oil level is normal, seems to go to the 1/2 way point when fully warm, but when cold its about 3/4 full.

Thanks for helping me with this

Here is what my lifter noise sounded like:
Cold start-very little noise,slight tapping
Hot-louder tapping not very noticeable
Shut car off for a minute then start(when hot)
Very loud tapping, tracks with rpm, mostly heard from front wheel wells.

Hope this helps you out.

mine is very loud too at all times. Sounds the loudest in the wheel wells too. Always thought it was a lifter but the dealerships I go to all say it's normal. I've gotten 2 case numbers with Pontiac and still no help. they say they will get back to me tomorrow with what they are going to do. Hear a clip of mine at http://briefcase.yahoo.com/jimmypop12 then click 02 WS6 and choose one to listen to

Had a fairly loud tapping sound from the passenger side wheel well. Didn't hear it much from up top, but down around that wheelwell or when alongside a wall. Dealer said it was INHERANT to LS1s. When we had it on the lift for something else at Hurricane Performance, F1 Dave noticed my short belt {AC} had some pieces missing out of it. Replaced the belt, and now it is gone and I actually have a very quiet engine. It's worth checking out!

That is the exact sound my car makes. It is most noticable when in drive about 550rpms.When the car is completely hot I can hardly hear it.

Well I just finished writing GM and the selling dealer of my car a letter stating that I'm unhappy with whats not being done to solve these problems.

These letters will be sent tomorrow, hopefully some good will come of this.

Chris, I listened to your car. At the 1:45 point I think I hear the air pump turn off and than the ticking is more noticeable. I'm sure you have checked it, but it almost sounds like an exhaust leak? Have you ruled that out?
