Well, I have a 98 TA/A4/3.23
It ran 13.70s bone stock.
With a cat-back and a Whisper lid, it ran 13.50s
Then added a Yank 2,800 converter. This was one of the very first Yanks made for the LS1 ($800). With Drag Radials to minimize wheel spin and a 1.90 short time, the car would run a best 13.25-13.35 @ 103
All these times are corrected for standard conditions: 29.92 baro press (sea level)and 59 degrees F.
Good luck getting a heavy *** 98 TA A4 in the 12s with just a cat-back, lid, and converter!
Maybe the newer converters being made for our cars are better, but the old Yank 2,800s everyone was buying back in 98 was good for about 2 tenths.

I have a fully loaded 98 A4 Z28 (3650lbs)
After putting Mac headers, 2800 Vigi, Borla, free mods and an air lid I went 12.7 @ 108. This was on radials with 2:73 gears.

Zangle....
Your headers helped you alot. The 98 have very restrictive exhaust manifolds and a very restictive passenger side downpipe (pipe between the manifold and converter).
Again, a 98 with just a cat-back, lid, and coverter (less than 3,500 stall) is going to have one hell of a time ever seing the 12s except maybe on an AOL Chat Room! <img src="gr_grin.gif" border="0"> Everyone is very fast in those rooms....
Just my opinion folks
Been there, Done that

BTW, A bone stock 98 A4 will dyno about 275-285 rwhp.
Thats good for about 100 mph trap speed with a 3,650 lb race weight car.
A lid and cat-back may give you about 295 rwhp on the rollers on a 98 A4. That pushes your trap speed to about 102.5 - 103

My car went 13.4-13.5 stock at 3 different tracks within 2 weeks of each other. Then with a lid and cut-out I went 13.2. Then with a Vigilante 2800 convertor, Fast Toys Ram Air, and ASP pulley I went all the way to 12.43 @ 108 MPH on slicks. From there, I put a T1 cam in and put skinnies on the front. That took me down to the 11.98 I am now. Since the 11.98 I have added Mac headers and gone to a bigger Yank 4200 convertor. When I get everything together I am hoping for 11.6-11.7 @ 115 MPH in a 3400+ pound car. All of this with the stock exhaust on the car, just a cheapo $29 cut-out. These cars rock, '98s may be a tad slower then newer LS1s, but they still rock!

You have one fast car:
I used the "Corral Dyno Estimator Program
3,600 lb race weight
112.64 trap speed @ 11.98
That takes approx [410 rwhp]
I need to know the secret on how to get 410 rwhp from a 98 A4 car with T1 cam, a pulley, FTRA/Lid, and a cutout while using stock heads and factory exhaust manifolds.

Hello,
I just got an offer from a local dealer that I may not be able to pass up. The car is a '98 trans am/A4. It has the 3.23 axle and is bone stock. What does this car run in the 1/4 mile? What will it take to get it to run high 12's? I was looking for a M6 car, but I may not be able to pass this offer up (like $250 a month for 4 years!!!!). The car has 48,000 miles and has had one previous owner.
Thanks everyone!
Doug

Dragon....
Call it what you want, but, the bottom line is; that it takes a specific rwhp to accelerate a giving weight to a givin MPH over a given distance.
You can use any of the many HP calculators that you want, but they all come in between 400-415 rwhp for the above conditions. Surely you can understand all this....

A convertor and tires will get you 12's no problem. Sounds like a good deal to me. M6's are great, but the A4's are better at drag racing (because they can launch great), but overall M6's are 'better' in my opinion (more fun, better gas mileage, less parasitic loss, etc). Just my .02

Haha.
If I had 410rwhp in my A4 and only ran 112mph trap speeds, I'd shoot myself. With a bazooka.
My car weighs 3664 with me in it, and runs ~310rwhp. It traps at almost 107mph (this was before the converter). I certainly hope another 100rwhp would gain more than 5mph. I would expect closer to 120mph in fact.
Also, for reference, my A4 ran 13.60s stock. With a cutout, lid and ram air it runs 13.3 flat. With the converter..well I don't know. Racing season is over but I expect at least a high 12 minimum, and like I already said, my car is heavy (with me in it). 12s is definitely fine for any LS1 fbody with lid/catback/converter. So long as you can hook-up, that is.

You might want to check out the "Top 50 List" in the the Drag Race section
ftp://members.aol.com/jnorris404/top50022002.htm
If you think you can get a 120 mph trap speed out of a 3664 LB car with 400-410 rwhp, your dreaming....

Damn, I had a post typed in but managed to delete it. *sigh*
Anyway, I only said 'closer to 120mph', not actually 120mph. I have no idea what my car would run with 410rwhp actually. I would estimate 118mph but who knows (until I actually get that much power). The point was just that a 410rwhp car would not run 112mph.
Also, that's the top 50 Bolt-On list. Stock motors. The Top 50 overall list is MUCH MUCH faster <img src="gr_stretch.gif" border="0">

Bone stock(except for NGK plugs and air filter removed) my 1998 TA with A4/3.23 went 13.27@105.4mph with a 2.1 60ft. That's at 1200ft elevation uncorrected. Of course the nice, crisp cold air helped. I also watched a 98 Formula with
2.73's go 14.00 flat all day. so it does depend.

Here is your answer (with good elevation)
1. Lid $125.00
2. MAF ends $75.00
3. Whisper Ram Air ~$135.00
4. Cutout ~$75.00 (includes install)
5. Magnaflow Muffler $90.00 plus install

Guys, my car weighs about 3420 with me in it, I believe my sig states that. I also only dynoed 333 rwhp in August. But that was with 20 degrees of timing, now I have a better tune. I really have no idea why my car ETs so well with such a mild combo. Last time at Atco, Sunday December 16th, I ran 91 MPH 1/8th miles! That was pretty shocking, that was before the Macs....

My '98 T/A with 2:73's and street tires with NO weight reduction whatsoever + I weighed 200lbs at the time went 13.17@106.49 with only a Whisper lid, !EGR, !MAF, !FRA and a 2.1/2 Flowmaster weld in muffler! it was 55* and I had a 1.996 60ft time! <img src="gr_grin.gif" border="0"> <img src="graemlins/gr_hail.gif" border="0" alt="[hail]" /> LS1

Kimchee....
I think your dyno estimates are a bit off.....
My car is a M6 so it will dyno better/MPH better at the track, but nothing too terribly different than a comprable A4....
My car has dynoed a best of 434/405, but on an average day would make around 420-425 rwhp.
My car has gone a best MPH of 121.50 at a 3620 raceweight, and runs consistent 120-121 traps.
I really don't think that your calculations are very accurate.....My car even went consistent 113-114 trap speeds at a 3600# raceweight, when it dynoed 351/357 with bolt-ons.
I believe that is decently consistent with 80% of the cars on this board, with a similar setup.......
