Default Specs/comments on the FIPK

In case you missed the other post on this, I will post it here for everyone to see:

I just installed a K&N FIPK on my car, and will be experimenting with it shortly to see how it does (once I am healthy enough to drive again). Before I get new dyno and/or track numbers, I found several things about it that were a pleasant surprise:

1) The kit has *smooth* silicone air duct tubing between the filter and MAF, and the MAF and TB. This ducting is *much* smoother than the stock ducting between the MAF and the TB, and will likely significantly decrease air flow turbulence over stock ducts.

2) Given that I have seen some comments that the FIPK is heavy, I did a weight comparison. The entire FIPK, including metal heat shield, filter, and silicone hosing, was about 4.5 lbs. The entire weight of my other intake, including stock plastic base, lid, K&N filter, etc., was about 5 lbs. The upshot is that they are about the same - I don't think half a pound is going to show up in ETs. Please note that I only had a crude scale here, so I could have made some *small* measurement errors.

One other thing I did was compare filter area:

3) The stock and replacement Powershot/K&N filter surface area in the usual setup is about 6.25" * 15", which is about 93.75 square inches. The FIPK filter area is about 5.125" * 26", which is about 133.25 square inches. Thus, in terms of raw filter area, the FIPK has about 42% more available filter surface area than the usual setup. Of course, other things factor in here besides raw filter area, but that is significantly more available surface area through which the engine can draw air.

4) (Obviously) There is a greatly reduced risk of hydrolocking from this setup, unlike what can happen with the FRA. No more paranoia about water puddles when it rains.

Given what I have already discovered about this unit, I can totally believe that these units are letting engines make additional power above and beyond lids. However, dyno and ET tests are the gold standard here, and until we get more of those, the jury is still out.

Let us know how it goes on the dyno! I'm actually more interested in track times though.

It would be interesting to see track times, the K&N FIPK vs an aftermarket lid and a FTRA.

Thanks for the weight comparision. That agruement should stop now. (Yeah right) I noticed about the smoothness of the hose also. Too bad the outside looks like he11. But I am working on a fix for it. I went by Baker Precision yesterday to talk to them about it. They have my filter to MAF hose for my FIPK right now. They are going to find out what tooling would cost. Then decide IF they will manufacture it. If they do they will have them out between the middle and end of March. Since they have my hose as a prototype to measure this hose will NOT need to be trimmed. It will be the exact size and shape. Anyone that has a FIPK that may want a FIPK Camaro Hose should call Darlene at Baker Precision 800-959-7757 and let her know that if they make you would purchase one. May make the difference.

WeatherGuy, how consistant are you at the track? Will you know if it affects your ETs? Since I will not be able to install my FIPK for a few weeks (No hose) I'm not very consistant at the track I won't be able to do this.

Not going to be consistent enough for awhile. I get the roll cage installed in about 9 days - I have still not even had a chance to try a pass with this 422, so you can figure how I am going to do with a high HP M6 car with new clutch, rearend, and tires

I will, down the road, do some passes with it, and some with the lid/FTRA combo, and see which does better. But this may take awhile. In the meanwhile, I should be able to find out dyno results within a couple of weeks.

As far the dyno goes, i'm not sure that it will be as accurate as track results.

Last time I was at the track I picked up 1mph by running with no air filter in my Whisper lid/FRA setup. I don't like running FRA and no filter. But I am running a screened SLP 85mm MAF so it's not that dangerous.

I have looked at the FIPK now for quite a while.

I might dyno it on Tuesday when we dyno my car at Speed Inc.

If it would be worth 5rwhp from 5000-7000rpm over my lid/holley filter, I'd upgrade. Let me know how you do. Maybe bring both so you can do a back-to-back?

Thanks for asking how I was doing. I had surgery to remove a nasty thing near the base of my spine. The upshot is that I am OK and healing well, but it hurts like hell to sit, much less drive a car with a stiff-clutch and a lot of torque.

I agree with you - I think doing a few back to back runs is going to be the only way to tell what this is really worth on the track. On the street, though, I think I am strongly leaning towards keeping the FIPK (unless the dyno says it would be too painful) because I am paranoid about hydrolocking, especially on an expensive engine like the 422.

IMO, it would be okay to run one airbox setup, like say stock lower, MTI lid, and Holley filter, then NO filter, and then the FIPK setup. And that might be what we do next week.
