Default what heavier oil to use?

Right now I use 10-40 but i didn't know if maybe I should use something a little thicker. It does use some oil, about a qt in 18-2000 miles. I also thought maybe a thicker oil would quiet down the ticking noise from the cam. What do ya all think?

I think the way our motors are so tight I wouldn't go above 5w 30...Just my 2 cents..

yeah you dont need more then 10-40,its probably consuming a little oil through your intake manifold..Get a catch can to keep it from going into your intake, also check your pcv valve and lines etc..Did you get those longer pushrods in there yet??

I have a catch can but it still seems to use some oil. I did get the pushrods in the other day but it still ticks. It's alot better than it was though. I'm getting ready to head to northern Iowa for the day so I'll see how the TA does. Hope it don't break down

they all tick when you put a cam in them though,i mean when i put in my first cam i was paranoid for a couple months thinking something was wrong.you will get use to the sound of a high-tech high horsepower engine,so dont worry about it.

G/C 0w30 is a little thicker than mobil1 5w30, but if youre already using a 40 weight, its probably not gonna help you. Might try the Amsoil euro 5w40. I used this for a couple oil changes and loved the oil. No consumption and really quieted my piston slap. I just cant justify special ordering oil for some reason...

If youre really using that much oil and its not in the catch can and youre sure the rings are fine, perhaps you didnt properly seat your valvestem seals??? Ive seen a few people do this and the valve seals ride up on the stem and let oil get down the guide.

I do think it's the rings. When i first got the car it used about a quart of oil in 1000 miles. It was bad and smoked like hell. So then I put new seals on the valves and that helped a ton. Doesn't seem to smoke blue at all anymore. Just black

will it hurt to use synthetic oil if all it has had was regular oil?

No, thats an old wives tale. Unless you really do have sludge holding your engine togather, but then youve got bigger problems.

You can switch to synthetic and back to petroleum when ever you wish.

The AMSOIL 5w-40 that was mentioned is HERE.

The AMSOIL 0w-30 that was brought up in the post above is HERE. The 0w-30 is actually my preferred oil and is the one I run in my 5.3.

Blue is oil. Black is excess fuel. Work on the tune. And excess fuel (too rich) will potentially wash down the cylinder walls and not allow the rings to seat.

It does sound like you fixed much of the consumption problem with the seals. a quart/1000 miles is too much. A quart/2000 miles is getting into hohum territory.
