Default MMS 218 Cam is a Winner!!!

I just picked up my car after having the MMS 218 cam installed in my 01 WS6. My pre cam dyno's were all in the 311RWHP range (SAE corrected) with the mods in my sig. I was shocked to see that the car pulled 362RWHP and 373RWTQ (SAE corrected) without any dyno tricks or locking the converter after the cam install.

Needless to say as soon as I can keep this thing from climbing all over the 2-3 rev limiter, currently set at 6300 shift 6600 limit. I will be posting up some new numbers.

Not too bad for stock heads and an A4.

The MMS 218 Cam is 218/218 .561/.561 and seems to very A4 friendly.

What is the Lobe sepration on that cam. I would consider it. How much was the cam and it installed all together?

It's a 114 LSA and I think I paid $425 from MMS. I paid another installer in Northern CA and he charges $500 for cam, springs and pushrod installs.

This thing was still making power at 6500RPM's which I didn't expect for such a small cam.

I have the custom compcam 218/218 563/563 114 LSA that I'll be dynoing with in a week. I wonder if its the identical cam that MMS uses? Hopefully I'll have some good results too.

How is the cam idling and what idle RPM are you set at ? I'm thinking the Thunder 220/220 114 LSA cam - it should idle close to yours. I'm just curious how smooth it it and at what RPM.

Ohh also, how is the low - midrange RPM power with that cam ? Was it a noticeable "put you back in your seat" difference ?

thanks,
Mitch R.

I had Speartech program a spare PCM with the idle at 750RPM's and it's smooth as glass. It also idles fine with the stock pcm at 550RPM with a little lope. The cam pulls hard all the way through the band, pulling 300RWHP at around 4000RPM (big SOTP difference).

The one problem I have now is I hit the rev limiter on the 2-3 shift everytime. I had Speartech program 6300 Shift and 6600 Rev Limit but it doesn't quite make it through the mushy shift, I guess I need to raise the limiter a little bit more.

Here is his dyno sheet.

I was very surprised also. The car idles really well even if it isn't as lopey as my 222/222 .534 114

That is an awesome gain. I haven't really been looking at the bigger lift cams because I don't want to deal with broken springs, but this cam has my attention. But, your '01 only dynoed 311 with headers, lid, and a pulley? My '99 dynoed a little higher with just a lid. Not slamming you, but that seems kind of weird for an '01. Maybe you just needed a cam to bring out the hp the other mods should have given you. If that makes sense

Some people feel that the dyno we are using is consistantly around 10hp shy of what other dynos in the area read so he could have been higher than 311rwhp just like he could be higher than 362rwhp now.

But even at 311rwhp he was running 12.13@ almost 112mph.
