Default Time for a new cam.... ;)

I've got a yank TP4400 stall on order, so I decided that power below 2500rpm doesn't mean that much to me anymore. I'm having MMS put in one of their 229v2 camshafts. The cam seems to make really good power from 4500-7200rpm, and I am hoping it will be worth ~13rwhp from 5000-7000rpm over my current 224v3.1 camshaft.

I should have dyno numbers by Thursday. <img src="gr_images/icons/wink.gif" border="0">

Why don't you try a TR 224 cam? I heard they are pretty stout <img src="gr_grin.gif" border="0"> <img src="graemlins/gr_devil.gif" border="0" alt="[devil]" />

that thing should be wicked! I was wondering when people would start going over 226 duration. sure we are limited intake wise but stock eliminators use what I am sure has gotta be in the 232s at least and they run pretty good even though its a race set up

how safe is it to rev to 7200 at the track?

I have to laugh at how people feel going up 4 to 5 degrees of duration will change a car from being good daily driver to weekend only racer.
Profile laziness has more to do with driveability and power than a incremental change at .050" duration. Seems like a fear of what they dont really understand to me.

13 HP at 5000 rpm seems like a lot to gain from 5 degrees of extra duration. Are the lobes & lift more agressive in the 229 cam?

V3.1 and V2. Does it mean that the 229 is a generation behind the 224 or that the 224 has gone through an extra generation? Starting to look like Microsoft over MMS <img src="gr_tounge.gif" border="0"> <img src="gr_grin.gif" border="0">

BTW, what shift points do you plan to use?

thats what I was thinking. i don't think a 230 duration cam is gonna make that much of a difference driveability wise if the profile is good

Oh man... what RPM do you plan on running that motor up too?

229/229 is a big honking cam...ESPECIALLY for an A4. (IMO)

Good luck and let us know how you do.

(any idea what your going to set the in gear idle at?)

Yeah it has more aggressive lobes. More than anything else I'm curious to see if I'll pick up
above 5000rpm. I could pick up nothing, I could see 20hp. MMS thinks I'll pick up 10-15rwhp.

Heh I guess all cams start at 1.0 and as MMS changes them they increment the version. It lets everyone know exactly what version of the cam they have.

Around 7000rpm I hope. Right now my power peak is around 6200. I'm looking for a 6800rpm peak like JS's setup.

The cam actually idles well. I borrowed a shop car that has the exact same cam in it, and with a 950rpm idle its pretty smooth. I guess the 229v2 cam has similar duration @.060 to the 224v3.1 cam, so the idle isn't much worse.

You've lied about your cam specs in the past, I'm sure you are full of it now. Your car has a power peak @ ~6800rpm. I'm sure you have a ~230 duration cam. We'll finally be on a more level playing ground. <img src="gr_images/icons/wink.gif" border="0">

My idle is set at 850 right now. I'm thinking 950 with the new cam?

Terry you and I have talked about this cam.. You are now telling me it idles like a 224 cam? My idle right now is set at 950rpm and my car idles almost stock with the T1.. I am still new to this high duration thing, but torque moves the vehicle and from what I have been told you would be down on torque in the lower rpm and peak..

You can always up the compression to 12.0:1 to offset the torque issue.. <img src="gr_stretch.gif" border="0">

I will tell you for sure in a couple days. <img src="gr_images/icons/wink.gif" border="0"> SO far my 229v2 "rental" car drives just like my 224v3 cam. I'm a big stall A4, low end torque means nothing to me. <img src="gr_images/icons/wink.gif" border="0">

uhh yeah ! Have any of these big cam A4 guys beat the 1/4 mile times of your car when it was "hammer" cam'd ??? Inquiring minds wanna know ?

My big decision is going "hammer" on a 114 LSA or the TR224 on a 114. I'm still thinking Hammer <img src="gr_images/icons/wink.gif" border="0">

You keep us posted... Low end torque means a lot to M6 guys.. That is a big cam.. What is the lift?

I think the issue is has John seen gains by switching to his current cam which is a 224 on XE-R lobes. Unfortunately, the lift increased too, so it will be hard to know if duration had any impact.

In an A4, the cam that yields the best ET may not provide the best mph because midrange torque at launch is so important. That's why for drag racing, a 112 LSA cam is better than a 114 cam, IMO.

Terry u keep saying I lied about a cam.
What cam did I lie about and do u have any proof/facts or is this just your way of feeling better about that fact that my JPR S1 setup KILLED any and all of your current projects.

Listen buddy,The cam in my car NOW is a 224-580
Thats it!!The car peaks at 6500 not 6800 so now your wrong on 3 counts.I'll be shifting it at 6800.

But u still havent answered my orig. question.
Why did u blast me a couple weeks ago for building a supposed race car and then do the same darn thing to your car?Maybe u should think about that one.

Your buddy

JS your cam sounds like the XE-R based cam. Is it on 114LSA or 112LSA?

If the cam I am trying now doesnt work out I am going to try either a 228/228 .585 lift 112LSA cam or a 226/226 .582 112LSA cam with the XE-R lobe.
Haven't made up my mind yet till after I see how the 226/234 557/575 lift 112LSA cam works out.
Cheers,
Chris

ps- Terry, are you running a 12bolt now?
I think a 4.30 gear would work well in that combo you have now.

I'm interested to the see the results. Too bad you are changing converters at the same time.

I ran a variety of cams in my old 346ci motor...

222/2224//113
236/240//111
228/228//111

A 110 LSA was universally felt to be too much, but I would like to see someone put out some #'s, I never saw any #'s from the naysayers.
