MIssing a stock main cap so i have a question
went to put the shortblock back together and one of the main caps is missing, believe to be the 5th one.. question is whether i can buy a new one or is this block now junk and i cant do anything about it?
Bummer... when you get one... it will all have to be line bored I beleive. (not cheap)
Just adds more cost to an already expensive assembly. (sucks)

Yeah given the uncertainties about that motor, I think you will end up spending a few bux on machining.
Go with a looser ring gap and don't forget a modified oil pump.

i think i am just going to put the car out of commission and just go with something different....dont feel like spending any kind of money on a stock shortblock.
Not a bad idea, besides align honing to assure proper crank fit, you also have to ensure the cap registers on both sides of the block skirt. If there is play, the cap may walk a bit under load. Always good to have them fit very snug.

Your preaty much screwed, the main caps are cut off the block, a replacement wont work right. You could get a replacement one and get it aligned bored/honed but it will never work how it did.

They aren't cut off the block, being the block is aluminum and the main caps are made from powdered steel just like the connecting rods.

Get a new cap!!!! if you where going to put the bottom end back together. you need to check the clerance and the bearing crush anyways. the caps where not cut off the block... for ovious reasons, and there where not cut Just for the block ether. You do want to make sure it fits snug. Even the billet Katech caps need to be machine some times. What bearing are you useing stock or after market? How many miles on motor? what happen why is motor apart?

check with your local engine rebuilder, or maybe scapyard dealer. look around for a big pile of engines in the industrial part of town. odds are you'll be able to find a bearing cap somewhere. once you locate your cap, go to a machinest, not necessisarily an engine rebuilder, and get your block line bored. most engine shops farm this type of work out, so you can save a few bucks this way.
