I'm not an expert, but I'll shoot this back to the top for you.

I also have stock heads (w/hogged-exhaust manifolds, gutted cats & Resonator exhaust) and I was told that a 226/230,560/560, 112LSA would be a good cam for me...I'm not looking for a smooth idle though.

I'll just wait until I understand it all better before I decide.

FWIW, Raughammer's site has an outstanding section for cam-info. You could check there.

hmmmm....no programming and no lope? 212/218? 216/220? 216/216? 218/218? Go on Hammer's site and check out all the cams there....also call or email Joe P., he has MUCHO experience with smaller Comp grinds like the ones i listed (all on a 113-114 BTW).

The "Xtrooper" Cam probably best meets your need:

Comp Xtreme Energy ramps 212/214 115 .558/.559

figure about 20 Hp gain.

Bigger than this and you start to risk having idle quality and SES lights without programming.
With programming, a 218/218 114 works well too.

I think a comp 218/218 would be great for you.
Cheers,

I am sure I will go with another cam sometime...depending on how this one works out. I haven't drilled the TB yet or closed up the exhaust. I was trying to get out of doing that but the exhaust needs to be blocked off anyways....don't want to get into trouble with the law. I was really surprised how much power the car is putting out with that small cam. If I can run low to mid 11's na with that cam then I might just leave it alone....doesn't look like that is an unrealistic goal. I was thinking about going to the 218/224 but we will see! Also depends on what I am going to do with the nitrous!

so those split duration cams, even though it'd help me a bit on the gun, would really mess up the idle quality? Zangel you'll have to let me know how you end up. i might get ls1-edit, just cause i know i'll need it at some point, instead of the HPP that i need to do shift points and rev limiter. for only a couple hundred more i might as well do it.

anybody else running stock head/programming/etc.. with cam?

I have talked to a few people that have the same 215/221 cam in their A4. Their cars idle just fine (almost like stock). I was just saying that some cars are a bit different. Mine gained alot from the cam and the idle was choppy and some others didn't gain much but had a stock idle.

....unless I just got the wrong cam

218/218 114 will not idle like stock at under 750rpm. Depending upon the year, 750 rpm will be enough to throw an SES code for high idle.

I purchased a cam with the same thought as you. I wasn't planning on doing heads nor did I want to do programming....so I got the 215/221 114 Comp Cam. I was told that the cam should idle like stock and that I shouldn't have any problems. I put the cam in and started the car up...it tried to idle but immediately died. I went and got custom programming which bumped my idle up to 800...Still didn't help! I have a really choppy idle (when it does actually idle). I put heads on the car shortly after. We have tried everything to make that car idle...
It is slowly getting better with lots of programming.

The gains? Well, it was like night and day! My car is doing alot better or the same as other cars with heads and bigger cams.

Yep, those dang split durations are killer on the idle.

What would you choose if you were to do it again?
