Default Project Big Gear Complete...Commence Project Big Cam

I've stayed quiet about what I've been doing but now that the parts are in route I'll give the details

I installed 4.71 gears last month (and boy oh boy are they fun LOL). Though not fully in track shape, I decided to try them out. I'm currently running a stock GM production airlid since I had hacked up my whisper lid for the TNT kit which I removed from the car. Still at full weight (3600 lbs) I ran an 11.94 @ 116.2 mph. I noticed 2 interesting things:

1) I ran a great ET considering I'm down 15 or so RWHP (which I dyno verified) by having a stock lid with a subpar 60-foot for me (1.74...they don't prep the track too well on street nights and you have all those damn hondas carrying water to the line LOL)
2) I found I was *slightly* overgeared for the B1 haha. I'm currently running a 6600 limiter (HPP3 limited) and tapped the limiter about 10-15 feet from the traps LOL. My Hoosiers have wore down some so I'm leaving about 100-200 rpm on the table due to the "shorter" tire.

Now that I have the gearing for a big cam, I figured I'd try out one to see how the car (with stock heads) would react to a somewhat higher powerband. About a month ago there was a post about a MMS229v2.1 that was installed in a stock headed M6 car and pulled some high numbers but took a big hit on the low end. Figuring that I pretty much can neglect low end with my 4.71s I figured I'd try it out

I plan on installing this bumpstick next weekend (16th), hopefully will have the limiter bumped up to 7100 by then and I'll try it out at the track. If I can maintain a higher average power over through the 6000 rpm band, I can really forsee this car running OVER 121 mph which is sick for a cam-only application

***One big cammed car that WILL have track times for the setup***

Sounds awesome good luck!!
Why dont you get a REAL set of slicks while you are at it
28x10 inch Hoosier slicks will hook like nobody's business

Good luck!

"Oh that poor, poor stock bottom end".

I'll give it 20 passes. You get more than that at 7100, andi will MEGA surprised. If you get more than 20 passes before you motor starts talking to you. You'll konw it is trying to get your attention when hear something like "knock, knock, knock...."

Again GOOD LUCK... the results should be interesting and informative.
In a drag race application that should be a potent combo. Good Luck.

well, I'm not planning on pushing it to 7100 but it'll be set there so I don't smack the limiter accidently. I'm gonna set the shift light to 6800...should shift right about there

I'm also figuring about 6800 through the traps...

almost a perfect setup LOL

yep...my bottom end already hates me LOL. I'm gonna buy a new block from valvegod, and throw in some fresh GM pistons rods, rings and ARP rodbolts in too (after balancing them). RUnning some 50W oil it should live at 7000 rpm with that setup . I'll have this done in the next month or 2

I'm gonna try to cap my bottom end redo to 1500 dollars haha.
Parts: 550 block, 375 rods, pistons, rings (all from valvegod)
70 ARP bolts
500 for miscellaneous balancing work and gaskets
thats about 1500 + shipping of parts

You know something....I think with the amount of gear I have...I don't really have to....It launches hard at any rpm it seems like

You will probably be leaving some HP on the table shifting it at 6800.

So what after market parts will you be using in the bottom end? What brand?

Oil pump? timing chain? bearings? rings?

Good luck on that bottom end. After all it's done for you... and now your going to treat it that way!

Ya big meanie!

Looking at the dyno chart Mike posted...looks like peak power is going to occur 6100-6800 rpm. So I'm figuring on shifting just over that (shift lite at 6800). but you also have to remember I'm flying through the gears now....I'm not spending much time at the top of each gear. The important gear will be 4th gear and crossing near peak is ideal

As far as parts:
Rings: GM (since these come with valvegod's package, I'll run GM rings unless I just run my stock rods/pistons but they are pretty beat up LOL)
Bearings: Federal Mogul
Timing Chain: Do we have too many options here?
Oil pump: Oops...almost forgot MTI/ARE blueprinted one of course. haha...looks like it'll be a 1800 dollar rebuild

My plan is to do something BIG next year. I'll have a spare block just sitting patiently waiting for that doing it this way

Brian,

Don't send a rod through the block at 7000+ and you'll have a spare

What are folks finding the stock bottom end is good for? 6500...6700?

So... w/ 420 rwhp or so and the 4.70's, you should carry the front tires through 1st gear (30')?

This should be fun to watch.

One thing that I would like to throw out that I'm sure your aware of is folks with the M6 has to watch out for is the bottom of the rpm range of the shifts. In particular the 1-2. That 2.66 to 1.78 is quite a drop. Even with a 6800 rpm shift point, the car will drop back to 4500 rpm at the beginning of 2nd gear. Not that you would be at that rpm long with 4.71s The rest of the gears should not be a problem as it would stay in the 5K plus range. A lot of people think that because they shift high that low to mid range power does not come into play.
I just thought I would mention that for some of the newbies considering the high rpm cams without the proper gearing and bottom-end prep. A lot of people want to shift at peak power, but the bottom end of the rpm range has to be considered as well.

Good luck with the new setup, it should be sweet.

you know whats interesting though...just past 4500 is torque peak where is pretty much where you want to land for shift recovery

1madss, you sure about that? I could see this happening if someone was a slow shifter, but I don't even drop back that far when shifting my car with stock shift points (~6100). When I slam second, I usually drop back to 4800 or so and keep on truckin. If a fella is dropping back to 4500 when he's shifting at 6800, he's need to go to driving school

1st gear at 6800 rpm with a 26" tire = 42mph. 2nd gear at 42mph= ~4500 rpm. Its the mechanical difference in the two gear ratios that cause the drop, not the shifting speed. 1st to second is the single largest change in gear ratios of the F-body T56. 2.66 to 1.78. While a power shift would decrease the drop, it cannot over come the .88 drop in gear ratio.

Brian, I think your cam choice will be perfect for your gearing tire combo. The ONLY missing part IMO is a full slick to take advantage of those 7Krpm dumps you will be doing. the QTP's wont cut it I'm afraid...
Good luck,
Chris

Make sure you get the updated rings from GM or you'll have an oil burner on your hands .
