Big cam vs small cam
I want to get a list going of the idle vacuum of the various sponsors camshafts, at say 900rpm. This will let us compare them and figure out which cams are big and which cams are small. Someone saying "it idles good" isn't good enough anymore. <img src="gr_images/icons/wink.gif" border="0"> Let's quantify this.
I'm going to go pick up a vacuum guage at pep boys and I should be able to post the idle results on my 229v2 camshaft soon.

Great idea, but keep in mind computer tuning will make a difference in peoples results, and this can alter readings making them harder to compare.

Re: Big cam vs small cam
OK I checked my idle at 900rpm (verified on scan tool), in and out of gear. In gear I pulled 14.5psi, out of gear I pulled 15.5psi. This is with the MMS 229v2.1 camshaft, and custom tuning.
Let's see where all the other cams fall! Come on guys...

Re: Big cam vs small cam
In inches. It pulls better vacuum than the 215/224 cam in my 355 LT1 engine. I remember back in the day I used to get 8-9" with the comp 306 in an 11:1 350 LT1... <img src="gr_images/icons/wink.gif" border="0">
Heads are ported truck heads. I guess no one else wants to post their vacuum? Afraid of finding out your cam is a lot bigger than you think?

Great lets get some more info in! How about that TR 224 cam JS? Or maybe that "216" cam you had? Ever check those?
Did you just check your vacuum now JS? Or had you done it before and remembered?

Yes I rember checking it after the LS1 edit tune.Pretty good for a 224-580 cam,Huh.

I won't know until I see some numbers from the other 224 cams out there. <img src="gr_images/icons/wink.gif" border="0">

Re: Big cam vs small cam
Right now I'm just trying to see how other cams idle. There is a 229v1 camshaft that had a much worse idle, and made about the same power I believe. I think the lift is in the 570 range. The only dyno chart I have, I made in photoshop and excel. <img src="gr_images/icons/wink.gif" border="0"> <img src="gr_images/icons/wink.gif" border="0">

Tery, how much compression are you running? At high altitude you can get away with 12.5/1 or more. High compression would explain the 900 rpm idle with a 229 cam.

Re: Big cam vs small cam
Do I need a vacuum gauge for this or will Autotap give me the numbers? I presume MAP is what I want to monitor on the scantool?
If it's just MAP, mine averages 14.2 while in cell 19. Minimum was 10.6, max was 30.1, median was 13.9. 484 traces.
My cam is a Comp 218/226 112, with Fastchips tuning.

You are running with an EWP, who makes it? How mutch did you gain with it? ET and trap speed?
<hr></blockquote>
Burger motorsports. It was worth ~7rwhp from 5000rpm-7000rpm.
I used a vacuum guage to measure mine. I don't know how it reads in autotap. I assume autotap gives you the value in pressure. Can someone help us convert?
I run 11.3:1 CR, and 26 degrees timing @ WOT on ~93 octane gas.
