Default Look at what the magnetic oil plug found!

I knew I had a busted rocker this weekend after doing some work on the Z28. The cylinder #2 exhaust rocker was starting to fall apart, and I found 1 roller bearing in the head, a rocker cap, and 1 unused spring keeper .

Well, I just pulled my oil plug and found a few more of these little guys. I'm going to stick the magnetic antenna in the plastic oil pan and see what else I find.

Gotta love the dead rocker arm syndrome. At least its not as bad as a dead oil pump.

Should be like nearly 30 of those little dudes in there.

I had the exact same problem yesterday. Took the car to MTI today and sure enough the passenger side had a roller rocker that was falling apart. They said it wasn't that uncommon.

I have busted 2 of the stock rocker arms within the last 3 months. I did have an MTI B1 cam with isky single springs on my then stock heads when I broke the arms.

What are the options for 1.7 ratio aftermarket rockers?

I didn't find any more in the oil that drained out. I have had the 941's springs, Ti retainers, hardend pushrods, and T1 cam since December 2000 with around 21K miles. I'm pretty sure my stock rocker failed after the last oil change. I always check my magnetic oil plug for debry, and this was the first time.

I changed out all my rockers with some pretty new stock ones so we'll see how long these last.

I believe that both T&D and Jesel make 1.7:1 ratio rockers, but prices start around $800 or so on the T&D's and go up for the Jesels. It's cheaper to get the Cranes, so just figure out what overall lift you want and have that much less ground into the cam to offset for the steeper ratio. If you already are running an aftermarket cam, then you'll just have to bite the bullet on the T&D's if you want aftermarket 1.7's.
If I remember correctly, there are 33 needle bearings per rocker. Good luck finding them Teddy!

Teddy,
Or for that matter, anyone, Ive got some used jesel 1.7 non adj. rockers. I have to get rid of them in place of the solid roller. Drop me a line if you are interested.

I lost one due to the rocker arm being stripped, and it had to be destroyed to get it off and replaced. Consequently I had those same little bearings on my oil cap for the next two oil changes. Doesn't seem that any permanent damage was done...this was back when I had only bolt-ons and I've been making 393 rwhp with the heads and cam since November. But who knows, maybe it woulda been a little more?

Louis,

I'm probably going to stick with the new stock rockers for now, but will check yours out when I come by the shop.

Can you check to see if my old dyno numbers for my 98 Z28 w/ cam is still on the computer? I would like to over-lap the graph of my new setup with the old graph.

Also, can you also email the cost of getting my car dynoed?

texastech97@yahoo.com

Thanks,
Teddy

That sight looks all too familiar. I also replaced mine with stock rockers. I wasn't about to pay $800 for aftermarket rockers. I've heard that '98s were the worst for rocker arm disentegration.

Keep in mind most valvetrain failures are from loss of valve control from inadequate spring pressure, the best of parts will still have problems if proper control is not maintained at high rpm.Needle bearings should be checked for roundness, hammered square needles are a dead giveaway of floating valves. I havent seen this problem with LS1 yet but it could also be bearing side retainer, lock failure.

It may not sound like a great deal but Jesel now has a sportsman series of shaft rockers for the LS1/LS6. They come in 1.7/1.75/1.8 ratios. They sell for 695.00. I know its not cheap but it is alot cheaper than ruining a engine. Also you will not be having to replace the factory rockers anymore. Just my .02.

I found 5 more bearings today after taking off the 941 springs and Ti retainers from the heads.

2 were directly under the spring associated with the bad rocker arm.

These 3 bearings were somehow three springs over and under the #6 exhaust spring.

Here's the bad rocker arm
