wtf are these and why are they in my friend's oil?

wtf are these and why are they in my friend's oil? <img src="http://www.symatec-computer.com/_tmp/wtf.jpg" alt="" />
we did an oil change and found these stuck to the drain plug and in the oil... what are they?

Re: wtf are these and why are they in my friend's oil? Looks almost like thread were cut for some bolt hole and stayed in the motor? Can you take a closeup of the "chunks" on the end?

Re: wtf are these and why are they in my friend's oil? Was this the first oil change on this engine? The reason I ask is because they look like drill shavings to me. During the firt oil change for any engine it's not uncommon to find drill shavings from ports and passages throughout the engine attached to the magnetic drain plug.
