Default Thunder 227/224 .566/.561 114lsa dyno results

We decided to try an experimental cam in my car last week. We had been wondering how a split pattern cam with bias towards the intake would work on the LS1 motor due to its restrictive intake. If you have a car with a bad-*** exhaust system (Longtube headers, 3" ORP, cutuout), we didn't see the point of the extra duration on the exhaust side. The LS1 exhaust port is pretty damn good in stock form as well. This was all speculation, so we thought it would be pretty cool to try it out.

So, we decided on a Thunder 227/224 .566/.561 114lsa cam. The only difference being the new intake lobe, as the 224 exhaust lobe is the same as I was previously using with great success.

Shane (XtraCajunSS) and I swapped the cam out yesterday in ~3hrs. Everything went well, so it was time to strap it on down on the dyno.

Here are the results:
TR 227/224 114lsa vs TR 224/224 114lsa

I didn't gain a whole lot (as expected), but it was cool trying out something not too many have used. The car had dynoed 389rwhp and 390rwhp on two different occasions, so we had a good baseline for the swap. There is probably a few more hp/tq in it when we go back and fine tune the A/F. It was running around 12.6:1. I made best power last time around 13.3:1.

The car has a little different idle to it and driveability seems to be unchanged.

We want to try the cam on another car with heads/cam where the intake is a little more restricted. We might have some dyno numbers from that in the next few weeks.

Jason

I made a couple of posts on this a few weeks ago. Thanks for performing the swap!! I would REALLY like to see the effects of more intake duration and higher lift on the all bore motors as well.
Cheers,
Chris
ps- I think a XE-R based 230/226 .59x/.585 lift 112LSA would be a great comparo too

Chris

That cam would do nicey as a turbo cam though.

Unlike a blower, turbos seem to like more intake bias. Looks alot like my new cam

Chris, we just wanted to make one small change at a time. We might try something along those lines later on.

We are happy with the results. Jason did pick up a solid, repeatable 4 H.P. in the upper rpm ranges with out losing any on the low end. We probably could have picked up more high rpm power with a 227/227 cam but it would have been a loser in the low end torque and drivability department. This cam drives just as well the 224/224 cam. It does definitely fly in the face of those using a split pattern cam with the bias on the exhaust. We definitely have further testing to do on this theory with some cars that have ported heads to see if it works as well.

I'll be interested to see how it will work on my 409. I think we'll see yesterday's result magnified by a big inch motor with a stock LS6 intake. More on this later...

I can't wait to try this on my new motor. It will be interesting to see what we can get between 7000-8000 RPM without losing bottom end...

Funny thing is Crane Cams told me that some people ordered cams that had the exhaust side smaller and they were getting awesome results.. Gained horsepower and did not lose torque downlow.. Probably could run a 230/224 .595/.581 lsa 112 and still be able to use 3.42's..

Thank you, thank you Jason for trying a "reverse split" duration cam. Ever since I spoke with Brian Ebert (builder of Al Corda's awesome stock eliminator F-Body), he's been a big advocate of reverse split duration cams for LS1s. He likes a 6 degree reverse split with more LSA. One of his cams would look like 230/224, 111LSA. Make one of those and I'll be on my way to Baton Rouge!

Cool information for sure
I have been thinking about a XE-R based 230/226 cam on 112LSA
Cheers,
Chris

Patrick, Comp will grind you that exact cam on the XE-R lobe

This cam sounds sweet. Can I get this under the gp that's going on now? Sounds like a good cam and probably wouldn't have to change cams if I put a turbo on either.

Intake biased split is a neat idea, but I think we all know this intake manifold isn't as bad as we let on. More work with the holley intake will tell soon.
