Default ARE Stg II H/C Done, First Impressions

Holy ****

Current Setup: 2000 WS6

ARE Stg II Heads & Valvetrain
Lunati Custom Grind .554 226/226
LS6 Intake (EGR Delete)
Ported TB
Whisper Lid
JBA Shorties (I know, I know)
Flow Master Exhaust
Firehawks on all 4
A bunch of other stuff

I haven't got it dynoed yet, but I can say that the car defiantly just woke up. I will be getting it tuned soon.

1st Gear: The tires have no chance. From 3500 and up they light up with just a little punch to the throttle.
2nd gear: The tires break free at at the top end.

The top end of this car is just insane. I defiantly lost quite a bit on the low end. I still have the stock limiter in (soon to go) but it is obvious that I will be making the brunt of my power above 5000 rpms. The car is a banshee on the freeway, but not as much fun to drive around town now.

The lope from this cam gives me a woody. On the stock programming, THE CAR DOES NOT IDLE WITH THIS CAM. It is good heal&toe practice though.

The car does run a little hotter with this setup. Of coarse the temp gage doesn't show it, but under the hood it is notably hotter.

ARE Oil Pump Kicks butt. Oil psi is just short of 80 on start-up.

Final impressions I have to say that I am very pleased. The car sounds like an old V8 racer with this setup. It is a pain in the butt to drive around town, but on any strait-away it is a blast. For anybody that would like to go this setup, I highly recommend getting the car programmed.
ARE was a great help during this install, I had a few problems, and on each they were very helpful.

It probably isn't that streetable because it isn't tuned yet, so it doesn't idle properly. Once the tuning is in, it should work great

Also there is less low end power which decreases driveability a bit, a set of 4.10 gears will fix that though

Ditto on the tuning. The biggest discomfort is the idle, but that will be fixed soon.

The fact that I have no low end is also compounded by the fact that I have a very light weight rotating assembly, aluminum fly and some other stuff. I have to get the car out of the 1000-1500 rpm range quick otherwise it begins to surge.

Anybody with a stock rotating assembly, or a steel fly, WILL NOT have this problem.

Again, tuning, tuning, tuning.

Soon to be

Do you have an automatic or m6? My car idles almost flawless on stock tuning (I haven't even drilled out the TB) with the hammer cam.

All that power is nice isn't it?

Congrats and dump those headers.

A day later it will idle if I baby it down to 1000 rpms. As long as I don't rev the engine or push in the clutch from 3000 rpm the car would idle....roughly.

Today, the car idles well. It drives like a normal car. Occassionally, the idle will dip drastically low, but the car always catches it.

I would still like to up the idle a bit, because this rough idle, when the car sputters and catches it, looks like it is hell on the motor mounts.

I think you need a 12-bolt or 9" with a set of 4.30's. The aluminum flywheel is definitely helping to kill bottom-end torque, but I bet your engine spins up pretty quick! As you know, tuning will make a big difference with drivability. Ed Wright retuned my setup with the new cam and converter, and it drives flawlessly in my A4. It's the Comp XE-R 224 on a 112 LSA, and I don't have any surging, stalling, etc. issues.
Good luck with the setup, and let us know when you get it strapped down on a dyno! Track times would be nice, too.

I really don't see how an Al flywheel kills bottom end torque. Maybe you are thinking of inertia to get the car going from a dead stand still. Once the clutch is fully engaged the lightweight flywheel should allow the car get going more quickly, ie. less mass to spin up.

Its not really killing the torque, but its reducing the drivability. Just like a low torque engine would have less drivability.
